This role encompasses operational excellence, regulatory compliance, health and safety management, client liaison, and team development. The successful candidate will ensure our laboratory operates efficiently, safely, and in full compliance with UK regulations.Key Responsibilities1. Operational ManagementResource CoordinationProcurement & Inventory Management: Oversee the procurement of laboratory equipment, reagents, and consumables, ensuring seamless experimental workflowsCost Optimization: Implement cost effective purchasing strategies to reduce reagent costs and optimize inventory turnover ratesSupply Chain Management: Maintain adequate stock levels whilst minimizing waste and ensuring continuity of operationsSpace Planning & Facilities ManagementLaboratory Layout Optimization: Adjust laboratory configurations based on experimental requirements, ensuring optimal workflow efficiencyEnvironmental Controls: Ensure ventilation, temperature, and humidity conditions meet required standards (e.g., Containment Level 2 biological safety laboratory requirements as per HSE guidelines)Infrastructure Compliance: Maintain facilities in accordance with UK health and safety regulationsBudget Control & Financial PlanningAnnual Budget Preparation: Develop and manage annual budgets (Capital Expenditure/Operational Expenditure)Resource Allocation: Allocate resources efficiently to prevent overspendingCost Efficiency Initiatives: Implement equipment-sharing programmes to reduce duplicate purchases and maximize resource utilization2. Compliance & Safety ManagementRegulatory ComplianceUK Standards Adherence: Ensure laboratory operations comply with:Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulationsControl of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) requirementsUK GDPR for data protection and privacyEnvironmental Protection Act and relevant environmental regulationsChemical Management: Conduct regular inspections of chemical storage to ensure compliance with UK hazardous waste regulationsDocumentation Standards: Maintain rigorous documentation practices aligned with UK regulatory requirementsRisk Management & Emergency PreparednessEmergency Response Plans: Develop and maintain comprehensive emergency procedures for incidents including:Chemical spillsBiological contaminationEquipment failuresFire and evacuation protocolsSafety Training: Organize regular health and safety training sessions for all laboratory personnelIncident Reduction: Implement preventative measures to minimize workplace accidents and near-missesAudit Support & Quality AssuranceRegulatory Audits: Support inspections and audits by clients, regulatory bodies, and certification organizationsDocumentation Management: Ensure all documentation is complete, accurate, and traceable, including:Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)Equipment calibration recordsMaintenance logsTraining recordsContinuous Improvement: Implement corrective and preventative actions based on audit findings3. Collaboration & Client EngagementProject Progress MonitoringTimeline Management: Monitor experimental task progress and communicate well with customer to deliver expectationProactive Problem-Solving: Identify potential bottlenecks and implement solutions to maintain project momentumReporting: Provide regular progress updates to stakeholders and senior managementClient Liaison & CommunicationProject Updates: Maintain regular communication with clients regarding project status and milestonesLaboratory Tours: Coordinate and conduct client visits, explaining laboratory capabilities, methodologies, and technical processesRelationship Management: Build and maintain strong client relationships through professional and responsive communicationCross-Functional CollaborationInterdepartmental Coordination: Liaise with Research & Development, Quality Control, Client Support, and other departments to ensure project alignmentInformation Sharing: Facilitate effective communication channels to synchronize project timelines and deliverablesTeam Integration: Foster a collaborative working environment across all functional areas4. Personnel Training & DevelopmentSkills Development & OnboardingInduction Program: Organize comprehensive onboarding for new employees, covering:Laboratory equipment operationHealth and safety protocolsStandard Operating Procedures (SOPs)Emergency proceduresUK regulatory requirementsContinuous Professional Development: Provide ongoing training opportunities to enhance technical competencies and regulatory knowledgeCompetency Assessment: Conduct regular evaluations to ensure staff maintain required skill levels and certificationsEssential RequirementsExperience & Education:Education: A degree in Life Sciences, Chemistry, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience in a lab).Lab Background: Previous experience working in a laboratory environment with some responsibility for day-to-day operations.Safety Awareness: A good understanding of basic UK health and safety rules (such as COSHH).Financial Basics: Experience tracking expenses or ordering lab supplies and equipment.Skills:Organization: Ability to manage daily tasks and keep the lab running smoothly.Communication: Clear verbal and written skills for talking with team members and suppliers.Teamwork: Ability to work well with others in a shared space.Reliability: A proactive approach to spotting and fixing basic equipment or supply issues.Desirable ExperienceExperience supervising a small team or coordinating staff schedules.Basic knowledge of quality standards (like ISO or GLP).Familiarity with H&S risk assessments.Previous experience dealing with external vendors or contractors.Working Conditions & BenefitsLocation: Harlow, England, United Kingdom (On-site)Employment Type: Full-time, PermanentBenefits Package:Competitive salary commensurate with experienceProfessional development opportunities
