Course Description: ART 107 Art History IThis course presents a beginning survey of art history in western civilizations and other global civilizations, from antiquity through the Middle Ages. Students are provided with the opportunity to evaluate various art forms as influenced by traditional, cultural, social and religious conditions, technological progress, and industrial civilizations. ART 108 Art History IIThis course is a basic survey of art history of primarily Western art from the beginnings of the Renaissance through the early 20th Century. Because there is a separate course in 20th Century Art History, this course will concentrate on art through the 19th Century, and up through World War I. It will include brief explorations of non-Western Art History, timing our exploration either according to the principle of contemporaneous developments or timing our shift to that study according to the points in time when such art became a part of the consciousness of artists and cultural consumers in the West. For example, Japanese art will be studied in connection with the art of the 19th Century, because such art became very popular in Europe following the opening of Japan in the mid-to-late 1800’s.Course descriptions may be viewed in the SUNY Ulster catalog.
