🚀 AI/ML Engineer | Healthcare Tech | Melbourne (Cremorne) | Full-TimeMake a real impact—build AI that transforms livesKarista is on a mission to positively impact 1 million lives. We're redefining how Australians access home care, NDIS, aged care, and therapy services—connecting individuals with tailored support and empowering providers with smart, data-driven tools. We're growing fast and looking for an AI/ML Engineer to join our passionate team in Cremorne, Melbourne. This is an opportunity to build production AI systems that directly improve outcomes for vulnerable Australians navigating complex care systems.🔧 Tech StackBackend: PythonCloud & AI Platforms: Major cloud AI/ML platforms (e.g. AWS, GCP, or Azure)AI/ML: LLM integration, prompt engineering, retrieval-based techniques, model evaluationData: Relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred), API design and integrationBonus Skills: Infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, containerization (Docker)What We're Looking ForWe care more about how you think and problem-solve than which specific tools you've used. You should be able to:Take AI from prototype to production, with a track record of shipping ML/LLM-based features that real users depend on.Reason carefully about reliability and safety, especially where AI outputs affect real decisions in a regulated, sensitive domain.Work fluently with modern AI development patterns—prompting, retrieval, tool use, evaluation—regardless of which specific vendor or platform you've used them on.Think in systems, understanding how AI components integrate with broader application architecture, data stores, and business processes.Balance experimentation with rigor, iterating quickly while still documenting decisions and evaluating outcomes properly.Communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders, explaining what a model can and can't do, and where human oversight is needed.Build with data protection and compliance in mind by default, given the sensitivity of the data involved. What You'll DoDesign, build, and productionise AI/ML features that support the company's product roadmap.Develop and evaluate model pipelines, including retrieval-augmented approaches.Build automation that improves internal efficiency and reduces manual effort.Implement guardrails, evaluation frameworks, and monitoring to ensure AI outputs are safe, accurate, and auditable.Partner with backend engineers to integrate AI services cleanly into the broader application architecture.Contribute to experimentation—testing new models, prompting strategies, and architectures—and documenting outcomes clearly.Ensure AI-driven features comply with data protection, and regulatory standards appropriate to a healthcare context. What You Bring2+ years of experience building and deploying ML/AI systems in production, ideally including LLM-based applications.Strong programming fundamentals, with the ability to work across data pipelines, APIs, and application code.Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud AI platform.Practical understanding of modern LLM integration patterns—prompting, tool use, retrieval, evaluation, and guardrails.Understanding of relational databases and how AI systems interact with structured business data.Comfort working with ambiguity, iterating quickly, and balancing experimentation with production reliability.A genuine interest in applying AI responsibly in a regulated, high-stakes domain like healthcare.Highly RegardedExperience with multi-agent or orchestration frameworks. Background in healthcare or another regulated, privacy-sensitive data environment.Familiarity with model evaluation, observability, and safety tooling. What Success Looks LikeAI features ship reliably and perform well against defined accuracy and quality benchmarks.Models and pipelines are well-documented, evaluated, and easy to iterate on.AI outputs are safe, explainable, and trusted by non-technical stakeholders.Integration with the broader platform is clean, stable, and maintainable. You take on increasing ownership of the AI/ML roadmap as trust and confidence grow. Why Karista? We're not just building software—we're building AI that matters. You'll work on systems with real, immediate impact on people's access to care, with the freedom to experiment, ship, and see your work reflected in outcomes within weeks, not years.
