Company Description Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS) was conceived through a dialogue between Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, with the vision of educating the young Tibetan diaspora and learners from the Himalayan border regions. The Institute focuses on preserving and promoting Tibetan culture, language, philosophy, and Buddhist studies through modern higher education. The Institute is a unique center for individuals interested in Tibetan studies, Himalayan cultures, and related humanities and social sciences.Role Description The Assistant Professor role at CIHTS is a full-time, hybrid position based in Varanasi, with some flexibility for working from home as per institutional guidelines. Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and delivering lectures, seminars, and tutorials; preparing course materials and assessments; and mentoring students in their academic progress. The role involves conducting independent and collaborative research, publishing scholarly work, and contributing to the academic reputation of the Institute. The Assistant Professor will participate in curriculum development, academic committees, and departmental activities, while supporting outreach and academic events such as conferences and workshops. The position also requires maintaining accurate academic records and fostering an inclusive, respectful learning environment aligned with the Institute’s values and mission.Qualifications Advanced academic training (preferably a Ph.D.) in Tibetan Studies, Buddhist Studies, Himalayan Studies, or a closely related discipline, with demonstrated expertise in the subject area.Strong teaching-related skills, including course design, classroom instruction, assessment development, and student mentoring in a higher education setting.Research and scholarly skills, such as the ability to conduct independent research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at academic conferences, and contribute to collaborative projects.Language and communication skills, including excellent written and oral communication in English; proficiency in Tibetan language and scripts is highly desirable.Academic administration and collaboration skills, including participation in departmental committees, coordination of academic events, and effective teamwork with colleagues and staff.Ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment in Varanasi, manage time and responsibilities independently, and use digital tools for teaching, research, and collaboration.Commitment to inclusive, non-discriminatory academic practices, respect for diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, and alignment with the Institute’s educational mission.
