Associate Director, Mental Health Counseling and Supervising Psychiatrist – Center for Student Wellbeing

Reports to:Primary Direct Report (Administrative and Operational): Senior Director, Center for Student Wellbeing (CSW)Secondary Dotted-Line Report (Medical Licensing and Psychiatric Oversight, and campus emergency responses): Director, AUC Medical ServicesPurpose:The job holder will serve as the clinical director for the Center for Student Wellbeing (CSW) and supervising psychiatrist for AUC, providing clinical leadership, psychiatric oversight, prevention counseling, and crisis intervention for university students. Reporting administratively to the CSW Senior Director and clinically or medically to the Medical Services Director, the role ensures high-quality mental health service delivery, clinical supervision of counseling staff, psychiatric evaluation and pharmacotherapy, and strict compliance with Egyptian mental health regulations, IACS accreditation standards, and APA ethical guidelines.

Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Supervisory Oversight:Provide individual and group clinical supervision to all CSW counselors, while ensuring high clinical competencies, evidence-based care standards, case conceptualization, performance management, and alignment with IACS accreditation protocols and APA ethical guidelinesPsychiatric Evaluation and Medication Management:Deliver expert psychiatric assessments, differential diagnoses, and psychotropic medication management for referred students, while ensuring complete compliance with Egyptian medical licensing laws, psychiatric care standards, and accurate medical documentationHigh-Risk Crisis Intervention and Emergency Response:Serve as the primary psychiatric consultant for high-risk campus mental health emergencies and a 24/7 crisis response system, while ensuring timely, life-saving interventions, risk-mitigation strategies for severely dysregulated students, and seamless coordination with AUC Medical ServicesDirect Clinical Care and Group Psychotherapy:Maintain an active direct clinical caseload providing individual psychotherapy, psychiatric consultations, and therapeutic group counseling sessions for approximately 500 students annually, while ensuring personalized care plans that foster student resilience and academic successExternal Network and Referral Management:Cultivate and evaluate formal referral relationships with external psychiatric hospitals, specialized mental health facilities, and outsourced practitioners, while ensuring safe, streamlined transfers and specialized care continuity for acutely ill studentsNeeds Assessment and Mental Health Prevention:Conduct ongoing needs assessment research and contribute to CSW outreach, awareness campaigns, and preventive mental health initiatives, while ensuring university-wide outreach aligns with evolving student mental health trends and diverse community requirementsGeneral Clinical Support:Perform other related clinical, administrative, and emergency duties as assigned, while ensuring full operational alignment across both CSW and Medical Services reporting structuresAdditional Support:Perform any additional related duties as required

Requirements

Minimum Education Requirements:Minimum MD (Doctor of Medicine) with specialization in PsychiatryLicensed Psychiatrist in EgyptExperience:A minimum of five years of experience, in university counseling servicesPreferred expertise with a similar population of adolescents and young adultsSkills:Excellent command of English languageClinical acumen, diagnostic skills, and strong psychiatric assessment abilitiesKnowledge of electronic medical records systems is a plusAbility to maintain strict confidentiality and privacy of cases or records in line with APA standardsStrong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, empathy, and decision-making abilitiesProven record of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, working well with globally diverse student populationsAbility to work collaboratively with various constituents and manage staff performanceAbility to work on an on-call basis as part of a 24 or 7 crisis response system, after hours response to campus or hospitalsWillingness to respond to situations on demand with sound judgment regarding student requestsDeep awareness of the seriousness, liability, and responsibility inherent in the nature of the jobThis position is open until September 30, 2026Placement is based on the candidate’s experience and skills.
