Turning that into actionable, real-time gas concentration maps and flux estimates — and getting that data reliably into WWTP control systems — is what this role owns, end to end: from the on-device Linux software that reads the raw stream, through the backend algorithms, to the API that delivers it.We're looking for a backend-focused Python engineer to build the full software layer between our hardware/firmware team and our customers: running on the deployed unit's Linux-based processing board, receiving sensor data off the FPGA/DAQ hardware, interpreting it, and delivering it into WWTP control systems via API. You work with data generated by the Electronics & Firmware Engineer's real-time hardware — you don't own PCB design, FPGA/DAQ logic, or real-time control firmware, but you do own everything in software from the moment clean data leaves that hardware layer.You'll own: the on-device software running on our Linux-based edge processing board — receiving and decoding the synchronised data stream directly off the FPGA/DAQ hardware (Python and/or C); the network layer forwarding that data upstream (WiFi/MQTT or equivalent) where relevant; spectral fitting and calibration to turn raw readings into concentration and flux values; 2D concentration/plume mapping — structuring spatial data into outputs the WWTP's systems can consume (data layer only, not a visual dashboard); flux quantification integrating wind and dispersion models; REST/MQTT APIs and integration into WWTP SCADA/DIMS/Hubgrade-type control systems; code quality, version control and testing standards across the full stack, edge to cloud.Required: expert Python (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas) with production-quality, tested code; comfort deploying and maintaining Python (and/or C) software on Linux-based edge/single-board hardware (e.g., Raspberry Pi CM4, Jetson, industrial SoM) — this is standard Linux systems work, not bare-metal firmware; experience consuming streamed/network sensor data (MQTT, TCP/WebSocket, or REST); solid DSP foundation (filtering, spectral analysis, noise characterisation); strong API design and integration experience with industrial/SCADA-type systems; solid Git/CI-CD/testing practice.Nice to have: spectroscopy/atmospheric science background; C/C++ for performance-critical work; wind data/Gaussian plume or CFD dispersion models; time-series databases (InfluxDB, TimescaleDB); ML for spectral retrieval or anomaly detection; LabVIEW familiarity (useful context — you're replacing pieces of our legacy LabVIEW environment, not required to have used it).Where this role ends: you own the full software, algorithm, and API stack — from the on-device Linux layer through the backend to the WWTP integration — but not the hardware, and not the front-end/dashboard (a separate, later hire). You don't design PCBs, write real-time control firmware, or build FPGA/DAQ logic — that's the Electronics & Firmware Engineer role.Early-stage deep-tech startup — real ownership and direct climate impact, but also ambiguity and shifting priorities.
