Job Description
The Cancer Registrar Intern will support the cancer registry operations at [National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS)] by learning and applying cancer data collection, coding, and management principles under close supervision. This internship provides hands-on experience in cancer surveillance, data quality assurance, and registry operations whilst contributing to vital cancer research and public health initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Data Collection and AbstractionAbstract cancer case information from medical records, pathology reports, and other clinical documents under supervisionLearn to identify and extract relevant demographic, diagnostic, treatment, and follow-up dataUtilizes standard setting agencies to identify and assign appropriate codes for procedures and treatments performed related to diagnoses, treatments, and complications of cancer care in the abstract.Assist with case finding activities to ensure complete cancer case ascertainment utilizing standard setter materials such as WHO ICD-O, applicable Surveillance of Epidemiology and End Results (SEER), North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) and Commission on Cancer (CoC) requirements. Coding and ClassificationApply basic cancer coding principles using ICD-O-3 (International Classification of Diseases for Oncology) under guidanceLearn topography and morphology coding for primary cancer sitesAssist with staging using TNM and other staging systemsPractice coding of treatment modalities and outcomesData Quality and ManagementPerform basic data quality checks and validation proceduresAssist with duplicate case identification and resolutionSupport data cleaning and standardisation activitiesMaintain integrity of the registry database by submitting accurate and timely data meeting department quality and productivity benchmarks.Analyses and reports information from the database.Job Requirement:Recently completed a degree in health information management, public health, life sciences, or related fieldCoursework in anatomy, medical terminology, or health data management preferredSkills and CompetenciesStrong attention to detail and accuracy in data handlingBasic understanding of medical terminology and anatomyProficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly ExcelExcellent organizational and time management skillsAbility to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive informationStrong written and verbal communication skillsPersonal Attributes:Genuine interest in cancer research and public healthAbility to work independently whilst seeking guidance when neededComfortable working with medical records and clinical dataAdaptable and eager to learn new systems and proceduresPreferred QualificationsPrevious experience with medical records or health dataFamiliarity with cancer terminology and treatment modalitiesBasic knowledge of statistical conceptsExperience with database management systems
Preferred Qualifications
