Apply & track with Apply EdgeCompany DescriptionAfrican-American Shakespeare Company was introduced in 1994 to open the realm of classic theatre to a diverse audience; and provide an opportunity and place for actors of color to hone their skills and talent in mastering some of the world’s greatest classical roles. We do this by producing work from the canon of classical theatre including Shakespeare and great American and world playwrights that is lively, entertaining and relevant. We are searching for a choreographer for our yearly production of Cinderella that will run from Dec. 18 - 20th, with rehearsals beginning on October 20th. Role DescriptionSeeking a choreographer who designs, teaches, and refines dance routines and movement for stage productions, ensuring they align with the director's vision, support the story, and enhance the overall performance.ResponsibilitiesAnalyze the script, score, and production concept to determine where movement, staging patterns, dance numbers, transitional choreography, or physical storytelling are required.Design choreography that supports character, rhythm, tone, narrative clarity, and visual composition while remaining achievable, teachable, and safe for the specific cast and performance space.Teach choreography in a structured progression that accounts for counts, spacing, alignment, traffic patterns, style, stamina, and retention across rehearsals.Lead warm-ups and physical preparation appropriate to the material being taught and reinforce safe movement habits, body awareness, and injury-prevention practices.Adapt choreography as needed for performer ability, injuries, costuming constraints, quick changes, scenic limitations, stairs, platforms, and other physical realities without compromising storytelling.Coordinate with the Director on staging priorities, moment-to-moment storytelling, scene flow, and the emotional logic of movement throughout the show.Coordinate with the Stage Manager on rehearsal needs, dance calls, spacing notes, traffic flow, backstage crossings, and tech-related movement risks.Attend technical rehearsals involving choreography and adjust spacing, entrances, exits, formations, and transitional movement, so choreography works safely under show conditions.Provide maintenance notes during the run, so choreography remains clean, energetic, stylistically consistent, and safe across all performances.QualificationsDemonstrated choreography or movement direction experience in musical theatre, theatre, dance, or closely related staged performance environments.Ability to teach movement clearly to performers with mixed skill levels and maintain morale while improving precision.Strong awareness of spacing, physical safety, and performance stamina.Must be flexible and understand the boundaries of a non-profit organization.Experience working in a diverse, self-motivated, and team-oriented environment.Job Type: Part-timeCompensation: $1500 (contract)Work Location: In person, San Francisco CAHow to apply:Email nazeerah@african-americanshakes.org with the subject line: Your Name - Choreographer Application.Attach a cover letter, detailing your choreography experience and interest in the role.Attach (2) work samples, these can be in video format.View the job description here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jsFM1_Bq4pnViwLWe3M8qdKMXvtXtZHy/view?usp=sharing
