CNC Shop Leader (Mastercam 5-Axis)

Position SummaryWe're looking for a hands-on CNC Shop Leader to run our machining department and drive quality, throughput, and team development. The ideal candidate is a skilled Mastercam programmer with deep 5-axis experience who can move easily between the programming station, the shop floor, and the planning meeting. You'll lead a team of machinists and programmers, own the department's day-to-day performance, and help shape how we grow our multi-axis capabilities.Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Team ManagementLead, schedule, and supervise CNC machinists, operators, and programmers across one or more shifts.Set clear expectations, run daily production meetings, and hold the team accountable for safety, quality, and delivery.Train and mentor team members on programming, setup, machine operation, and best practices; build a bench of cross-trained talent.Conduct performance reviews, support hiring decisions, and address personnel issues fairly and promptly.Foster a culture of safety, ownership, and continuous improvement.Programming & TechnicalCreate, edit, and optimize CNC programs in Mastercam for 3-, 4-, and 5-axis mills (simultaneous and 3+2), as well as lathes/mill-turn where applicable.Develop efficient toolpaths, fixturing strategies, and tooling selections to reduce cycle times and improve part quality.Verify programs using simulation and machine verification tools to prevent crashes and scrap.Interpret complex engineering drawings, 3D models, and GD&T requirements.Troubleshoot machining problems at the machine, including setups, offsets, tool wear, and surface finish issues.Support new part introductions, first-article inspections, and process documentation.Operations & Continuous ImprovementPlan and prioritize the machining schedule to meet customer delivery dates and maximize machine utilization.Track and report KPIs such as on-time delivery, scrap/rework, OEE, and labor efficiency.Lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for quality escapes and nonconformances.Drive lean initiatives (5S, setup reduction, standard work) and identify opportunities for automation.Partner with engineering, quality, purchasing, and maintenance to resolve issues and plan capacity.Oversee tooling inventory, preventive maintenance coordination, and shop organization.Enforce safety policies and ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards.Required Qualifications5+ years of leadership or supervisory experience in a CNC machining environment.Advanced proficiency in Mastercam, including 5-axis simultaneous toolpath programming.Strong knowledge of CNC machine operation, setup, work holding, and cutting tool technology.Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, CAD models, and GD&T.Proficient with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, etc.).Working knowledge of G-code and common controls (e.g., Fanuc and Haas).Demonstrated ability to manage schedules, meet deadlines, and lead teams under production pressure.Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.Preferred QualificationsTechnical degree or certification in machining, manufacturing technology, or a related fieldExperience in aerospace, defense, medical, or other tight-tolerance industries.Familiarity with AS9100, ISO 9001, or similar quality management systems.Experience with CMM programming or inspection, ERP/MRP systems, and post-processor editing.Background in lean manufacturing or Six Sigma.Experience machining exotic materials such as titanium, Inconel, and stainless steels.
