Apply & track with Apply EdgeWe are looking for a Design & Development Engineer – High Voltage Power Supply (Lead Class) to join the engineering team in Tokyo/Shiga, Japan, supporting the development of advanced power supply technologies for plasma heating and nuclear fusion applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop high-voltage power supply systems for plasma heating and advanced energy applications.
- Design and analyze high-voltage circuits and power electronics systems to ensure reliable, efficient, and safe operation.
- Develop power supply control systems for industrial and advanced energy applications.
- Perform electrical simulations, circuit analysis, and design evaluations.
- Develop prototypes and conduct performance, evaluation, and withstand-voltage testing under high-voltage operating conditions.
- Design and evaluate power electronics systems including inverters, choppers, switching power supplies, and related circuits.
- Select and specify electrical and power electronic components and support component procurement activities.
- Prepare technical specifications, system requirements, test procedures, and engineering documentation.
- Conduct technical reviews with suppliers and coordinate technical requirements, proposals, drawings, and documentation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, High-Voltage Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Practical experience in at least two of the following areas:
- High-voltage circuit design involving several kV or higher.
- Design of power supply control systems for industrial applications.
- Evaluation, testing, and withstand-voltage testing in high-voltage environments.
- Power electronics circuit design, including inverters, choppers, switching power supplies, or similar systems.
- Strong understanding of electrical circuits, power electronics, and high-voltage engineering.
- Experience with electrical simulation, circuit analysis, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Intermediate or higher English proficiency, with the ability to read and write technical documents and participate in English-language meetings.
- Nuclear or fusion industry experience is not mandatory. Candidates with relevant high-voltage or power electronics experience from other industries are welcome.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with EMC and electrical noise countermeasures.
- Experience in high-frequency circuit design.
- Experience designing power electronics systems of 50 kW or higher.
- Experience designing and testing electronic boards that interface power and control electronics.
- Experience installing and commissioning electrical or power equipment.
- Experience with oil-immersion or vacuum insulation design.
- Experience preparing requirements specifications, test procedures.
- Experience in power distribution, substations, railway power systems, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, accelerator power supplies, X-ray/medical equipment, broadcasting/radar transmitters, or similar high-voltage applications.
- Relevant electrical engineering qualifications or certifications. Ideal Candidate:
- Strong technical background in high-voltage power supplies and power electronics.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and electrical design skills.
- Able to make independent technical decisions and take ownership of complex engineering challenges.
- Comfortable working with multidisciplinary engineering teams, suppliers, customers, and international engineering partners.
- Willing to work with advanced voltage ranges and technologies beyond those commonly used in general industries.
- Proactive, curious, and eager to explore new technologies and advanced energy applications.
- Passionate about contributing to the development and commercialization of nuclear fusion and next-generation sustainable energy technologies.
