From time to time, the radiographer will be expected to assist with administration, answer telephone enquiries, assist patients, manage practice-related documentation and undertake certain financial and operational responsibilities.The successful candidate must therefore be more than technically competent. We are looking for someone who is professional, accountable, patient-centred, organised, trustworthy and able to work independently.Key Responsibilities1. Diagnostic RadiographyPerform general diagnostic radiographic examinations according to appropriate clinical indications, protocols and professional standards.Obtain high-quality diagnostic images while applying appropriate positioning and exposure techniques.Verify patient identity, examination details and relevant clinical information before performing examinations.Confirm that the requested examination is appropriate and clarify any discrepancies with the referring practitioner where necessary.Provide appropriate patient preparation and clear instructions before, during and after examinations.Assess patients appropriately and provide professional and compassionate patient care.Recognise situations requiring additional clinical attention and escalate appropriately.Work professionally with referring practitioners and radiologists to support appropriate patient management.Ensure images are correctly processed, labelled, stored and transmitted for reporting where applicable.Maintain appropriate patient and examination records.2. Radiation Protection and Patient SafetyApply the principles of radiation protection and optimisation in all examinations.Ensure radiation exposure is kept as low as reasonably achievable while obtaining diagnostically adequate images.Follow all applicable radiation-safety procedures and practice protocols.Ensure appropriate use of radiation protection equipment.Maintain awareness of occupational and patient radiation risks.Report radiation incidents, equipment problems or safety concerns promptly.Ensure that only appropriately authorised and trained personnel operate radiation equipment.3. Quality Assurance and Equipment ResponsibilitiesParticipate in and maintain the practice's Quality Assurance and Quality Control programme.Perform or coordinate routine quality-control activities as required.Monitor equipment performance and promptly report faults or abnormalities.Maintain appropriate QA, QC, equipment and radiation-safety records.Liaise with service providers, engineers and other relevant personnel regarding equipment maintenance and servicing.Ensure that equipment is operated according to manufacturer requirements, practice procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.Assist in ensuring compliance with applicable SAHPRA radiation-control requirements and licence conditions.SAHPRA's current radiation-control guidance specifically recognises quality-control testing as part of the safe and effective operation of medical diagnostic X-ray systems.4. Patient Administration and Reception SupportAlthough an administrator will be available to assist with reception and administration, the radiographer will be expected to assist with practice administration when required.Duties may include:Answering incoming telephone calls and responding to routine patient enquiries.Booking and confirming patient appointments when required.Receiving and assisting patients at reception.Verifying patient information and referral documentation.Assisting with medical aid and cash patient administration.Maintaining accurate patient and practice records.Filing and organising documentation.Assisting with correspondence and communication with referring practitioners.Monitoring outstanding administrative matters.Assisting the administrator during busy periods or when the administrator is unavailable.Maintaining professional and confidential communication with patients and healthcare professionals.5. Financial and Cash ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate may be required to assist with selected financial and cash-management responsibilities within the practice.These may include:Receiving and processing patient payments where required.Issuing receipts and maintaining accurate payment records.Reconciling daily cash/EFT/card transactions where applicable.Recording and reporting discrepancies.Following the practice's financial controls and procedures.Protecting practice cash, financial information and patient billing information.Assisting with monitoring outstanding accounts and administrative follow-up.Maintaining strict confidentiality regarding financial and business information.Integrity, accuracy and accountability are essential for this aspect of the position.6.
