Home to the world’s largest public collection of artwork and ephemera from Frederic Remington and an important collection of sculpture by Sally James Farnham, the Museum is building on more than a century of history while strengthening its role as a regional cultural anchor and nationally significant American art institution.As the Museum plans for its future, expanding contributed revenue and building a sustainable development program are among our highest institutional priorities. We are seeking an experienced, highly organized, and motivated Director of Development to help build that program and significantly expand philanthropic support for the Museum.Position SummaryThe Director of Development is the Museum’s senior fundraising professional and the Executive Director’s primary partner in developing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy.This is a strategic and hands-on role with responsibility across individual and major giving, corporate and foundation support, annual giving, membership, grants, donor stewardship, and campaign planning. The Director will operate as a senior individual contributor, personally developing donor and funder relationships and executing fundraising strategy while working closely with the Executive Director, Board of Trustees, Remington Foundation, and Museum staff.The Museum is specifically seeking a builder: someone who can bring organization, discipline, and consistent follow-through to a growing development program. The successful candidate will strengthen the systems underlying the Museum’s fundraising while actively cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding supporters.The Director will not be starting from a blank slate. The Museum has established donors, members, corporate and foundation relationships, grant support, and significant opportunities for growth. The Director will be expected to organize and build upon this foundation to create a more deliberate, relationship-centered, and sustainable development program.Scope of ResponsibilityIndividual & Major GivingCorporate Sponsorships & PartnershipsAnnual GivingMembership GivingFoundation & Government GrantsDonor Relations & StewardshipDevelopment Systems & Donor DataCapital & Special Campaign SupportRemington Foundation Development StrategyEssential Duties & ResponsibilitiesDevelop and execute an annual development plan with clear fundraising goals, priorities, timelines, and measures of success.Manage and grow a portfolio of individual, corporate, and foundation donors and prospects, including direct cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and consistent follow-up.Build the Museum’s major gifts program in partnership with the Executive Director, including prospect identification and research, qualification, moves management, cultivation strategies, donor meetings, solicitation, and stewardship.Own the Museum’s corporate sponsorship strategy, including identifying prospects, developing sponsorship opportunities, conducting direct outreach and solicitation, managing relationships, and ensuring appropriate stewardship and recognition.Lead annual giving and membership fundraising strategies, including donor acquisition, renewal, retention, upgrading, reactivation, segmentation, and year-end giving.Direct the Museum’s grant strategy and pipeline across private foundation and government sources, including prospect identification, grant calendars, proposal development and coordination, reporting, and stewardship. Grant writing experience is strongly preferred.Establish and maintain effective donor relations and stewardship practices across all areas of giving, ensuring timely acknowledgment, meaningful communication, and consistent follow-through.Assume ownership of the Museum’s fundraising systems and donor data. Evaluate the current donor management system, strengthen data integrity and reporting, and recommend and oversee a transition to a new CRM platform if appropriate.Develop and maintain a qualified donor and prospect pipeline that clearly identifies relationship status, giving potential, next actions, responsibility, and timelines.Work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Trustees to identify prospects, prepare leadership for donor conversations, coordinate introductions and solicitations, and strengthen a shared culture of philanthropy.Work directly with the Remington Foundation Board to coordinate development strategy, identify and cultivate prospective supporters, strengthen donor relationships, and advance the Foundation’s role in supporting the Museum’s long-term financial sustainability.Support planning and readiness for capital, special, and other significant fundraising campaigns, including cases for support, prospect development, campaign strategy, and donor cultivation.Monitor fundraising performance and provide regular, useful reporting to the Executive Director and appropriate Museum and Foundation leadership.We’re a small shop with a collaborative team, so we would be remiss without: Other duties as assigned.Immediate PrioritiesThe Director of Development will enter the position at an important moment for the Museum and will be expected to begin substantive fundraising activity immediately.Initial priorities, in order, will include:Corporate Sponsorships: Immediately organize and pursue corporate sponsorship opportunities, beginning with existing prospects and expanding the Museum’s corporate pipeline through direct outreach and solicitation.Year-End Giving: Plan and execute a strong year-end annual giving campaign, including donor segmentation, messaging, personalized outreach, Board participation, follow-up, and analysis.Major Gifts: Build an actionable major donor pipeline through research and qualification of existing and prospective supporters and begin moving priority prospects toward cultivation and solicitation in partnership with the Executive Director and organizational leadership.At the same time, the Director will begin assessing the Museum’s development systems and donor data so that fundraising activity is supported by reliable information, clear processes, and consistent follow-through.Success MeasuresSuccess in this position will be evaluated through both philanthropic revenue and the strength of the development program being built. Measures will include:Growth in total contributed revenue.Corporate sponsorships secured and renewed.Successful annual and year-end giving campaigns.Growth and retention of donors and members.Development of a qualified and actively managed major gift pipeline.Major donor cultivation, solicitation, and gifts secured.Corporate, foundation, and government funding secured.Reliable donor data, prospect management, and fundraising reporting.Timely and consistent donor acknowledgment, stewardship, and follow-up.Effective coordination among the Director of Development, Executive Director, Remington staff team, Board of Trustees, and Remington Foundation.Demonstrated initiative, organization, communication, accountability, and follow-through.QualificationsThe successful candidate will bring:A minimum of five years of progressive nonprofit fundraising or advancement experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and demonstrated success.Demonstrated experience across multiple areas of fundraising, which may include major gifts, annual giving, corporate sponsorships, foundation relations, membership, grants, or campaigns.Demonstrated success cultivating donor relationships and directly soliciting philanthropic support.Experience building, strengthening, or managing a development program or significant component of one.Strong understanding of donor CRM/database systems, prospect management, donor segmentation, and fundraising reporting.Excellent organizational and project-management skills, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and follow through without extensive supervision.Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including donor-facing communications and persuasive fundraising writing.Experience with grant strategy, grant writing, and/or grant management strongly preferred.Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the Executive Director, trustees, Foundation leadership, staff, donors, and community partners.Sound judgment, professionalism, discretion, and respect for donor confidentiality.Experience in museums, arts and culture, higher education, historic sites, or other mission-driven nonprofit organizations is valued but not required.How to ApplyInterested candidates should submit the following to Executive Director Maggie McKenna at director@fredericremington.org:A resume outlining relevant professional experience.A cover letter describing your interest in the position and the experience you would bring to building and growing the Museum’s development program.Three professional references who may be contacted as part of the hiring process.
