- Finksburg, Maryland (Carroll County)
- Full-TimeIn 1900, Ernest Shackleton allegedly ran an ad like the below for an Antarctic expedition, and the right men showed up.LEADER WANTED FOR NON-STOP, HARD, DIRTY WORK.Grit and determination required. Early mornings, long days, and weather that does not care about your plans. The trucks are new, the equipment is modern, and the technology is real — but none of it picks up a single can without people. This business runs on man-power, and leading those men and women is the hardest and most important job in it. Drivers, throwers, mechanics, and supervisors are counting on you. Tens of thousands of families count on them. Full authority to run the operation — and full accountability when it doesn’t run. Honor, recognition and real ownership of the outcome in the event of success. We run our ads the same way — because we would rather tell you the truth about this job and have the right leader apply than dress it up and hire the wrong one.Who We AreEagle Transfer Services is a family-owned waste and recycling company with over 47 consecutive years of service in the Baltimore area. Every week our trucks serve roughly 45,000+ homes and hundreds of commercial clients across residential curbside, commercial, and roll-off dumpster routes. Our mission is simple and we live it daily: help our customers properly dispose of their trash and recycling in a safe, courteous, timely, and effective manner. Our core values are not wall art. We take pride in the pickup. We respect the hustle. We want everyone to go home safely. If those three sentences mean something to you, keep reading. The Daily Mission: Get the Trash Picked UpEvery morning before sunrise, this company has one critical mission: get every route covered, every can emptied, and every employee home safe. There is no mental health day in this business. The trash never stops so the trucks have to roll, or else. As Director of Operations, that mission belongs to you — not to perform it with your own hands, but to lead the people who perform it. New trucks and modern systems help, but this operation runs on man-power: drivers, throwers, mechanics, and supervisors. Recruiting them, training them, retaining them and leading them well is the greatest challenge of this seat — and the reason it exists. We save our commercial clients money by showing up on time. This type of last mile service is tough to master and easy to screw up, to the point Amazon doesn’t even do it “in house” We need a leader that can help us attain a high level of achievement for our success and our client success. The Seat You’re FillingThis is the number-two seat in the company — the operational right hand to the President and Owner. The President sets direction, develops new business, and plans capital investment. You run the operation that delivers on it, and you stand in for him when he’s not in the room. You will manage the department supervisors — Contract, Roll-Off, Maintenance and Dispatcher. They execute the daily work. You build the standards, the systems, the people and the culture who make the daily work succeed. What You Will Own
- Capacity Management — matching trucks, drivers, throwers, containers, and route hours against demand — knowing when we can take on new business and when we need to add capacity before service suffers.
- Material Management — full oversight of our container fleet and material flows — roll-off and dumpster inventory, placement, utilization, and repairs and upkeep.
- Resource Management — allocating people and equipment across departments and making the trade-offs a single department supervisor can’t make alone.
- Recruiting, Training & Performance Review — owning driver hiring standards, the training bar every driver must clear before running a route solo, and formal performance reviews of the supervisors themselves. You build leaders, not just headcount.
- SOP Development — writing, maintaining, updating and enforcing the standard operating procedures for the whole operation — routing, inspections, safety protocols, maintenance handoffs.
- People & Equipment Documentation — Equipment inspections and registrations, incident documentation, Parts Inventory systems, Purchase Order systems, Fleet Maintenance programs, DVIRS, Repairs notices. When something goes wrong on the road, our paperwork is our shield — and it will be airtight under you.
- Safety & Compliance — Building, promoting and enforcing the safety culture that gets everyone home. Accident rates, safety audits, and DOT compliance are your scoreboard.
- Internal Escalation — you are the decision point above the supervisors. Cross-department conflicts, major service failures, and problems beyond a supervisor’s authority stop at your desk — not the President’s.
- Financial & Operations Reporting — operational budget, cost per stop, route productivity, fuel, and downtime — reported to the President in a consolidated operational picture with recommendations, not just numbers.
- Fleet & Shop Oversight — oversight of the shop that keeps a modern heavy-duty fleet road-ready every morning — preventive maintenance discipline, downtime reduction, and support of the Maintenance Supervisor.Supporting the PresidentBeyond daily operations, you will work shoulder-to-shoulder with the President/Owner on the responsibilities of running the whole company:
- Capital Investment Planning — weighing in on truck, container, and facility purchases with an operator’s eye.
- New Business Development Support — Municipal Route Bidding, planning and development. Furthermore evaluating whether we have the capacity to service the growth the sales team brings in — and building it when we don’t.
- Policy & Procedures — refining company policy and procedures alongside the President as the business grows.
- Staff Engagement & Retention — owning the engagement and retention of the operational workforce. Turnover is expensive; leadership is the cure.
- Profit Awareness — running the operation with profit, gross margin, and cash discipline in view — you think like an owner because you sit beside one. This Job Is Not for Everyone
- If you need to be told what to do each morning, this is not your seat. You will be handed authority and expected to use it.
- If you lead from behind a desk, this is not your seat. Our supervisors, drivers, and mechanics respect leaders who show up in the yard at 4:00 AM or earlier and know the difference between a packer blade and a trunnion bar.
- If you avoid hard conversations, this is not your seat. You will hire, coach, review, and — when necessary — fire.
- If a family business where the owner knows every truck by its number sounds too close-knit, this is not your seat. If it sounds like home, keep reading.Who We’re Looking For
- Proven leadership experience running operations in waste hauling, trucking, logistics, construction, or another asset-heavy field — managing managers, not just crews.
- Prior experience running or overseeing a modern heavy-duty truck shop in a fleet setting — preventive maintenance programs, DOT compliance, downtime management, and technology-equipped diesel equipment.
- CDL license preferred. Leaders who have sat in the driver’s seat understand the drivers they lead.
- Working command of budgets, cost control, KPIs, and financial reporting — you can build a scoreboard and run a business off of it.
- Strong systems mind: you write SOPs, build training programs, and create structure where there was none.
- Plain, direct communication up, down, and across the company.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, or a related field is a plus — but a track record of running a hard operation well counts for more.
- Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening. What You Get in Return
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience, plus benefits. [Compensation range $$$$$.]
- A true second-in-command seat: real authority, a direct partnership with the Owner, and a voice in every major decision the company makes.
- A 47-year-old family company with deep roots, loyal customers, modern trucks and systems (GPS/dash-cam fleet technology, modern routing ERP software and CRM software), and an owner investing in the future.
- The chance to build something: the systems, the team, and the next chapter of a company that matters to tens of thousands of families every week. The Standard We HoldWe take pride in the pickup. We respect the hustle — whether it’s throwing a can, repairing a truck, or building a training program. And above everything, we want everyone to go home safely, every single day. The Director of Operations doesn’t just meet that standard. The Director of Operations is that standard.Answer the CallIf you read this and felt something stir — if hard, honest, essential work under your command sounds like the job you’ve been building toward your whole career — we want to hear from you.
