PhD Position in Edge AI Workload Orchestration at Technische Universität Berlin, GermanyThe Chair of Software and Business Engineering at Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) is looking for a:Research Assistant / PhD Student (m/f/d)The position is full-time and limited to 36 months; part-time employment and an extension may be possible. The remuneration is in accordance with salary grade 13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen. The position is to be filled by April 1st 2027 or earlier. The position is part of the research project Grid-Aware AI Workload Mobility for the Computing Continuum (AEGIS) https://aegis-dn.eu/. Today's tools can move services between different computing sites, but they do not understand the power grid and struggle to move running AI jobs safely. In this project, you will build the missing grid-aware layer for orchestrating computing resources and AI workloads along the edge-cloud continuum. You will develop middleware that operates on top of existing cloud and edge frameworks and can move stateful AI workloads across the edge-to-cloud continuum, or switch between AI model variants at runtime, in response to grid signals while continuously enforcing security policies. The Chair of Software and Business Engineering was established at TU Berlin in 2025 and conducts research at the intersection of distributed systems and business engineering. Its research particularly focuses on distributed machine learning, edge computing, and distributed trust.###Your Tasks###* Conducting independent and high-quality research on grid-aware AI workload orchestration within the AEGIS project.* Developing middleware concepts for moving AI workloads across the edge-cloud continuum.* Developing and evaluating mechanisms for the stateful migration of AI workloads and for switching between AI model configurations at runtime.* Designing a unified middleware API for workload-mobility commands that enforces security policies during migration.* Evaluating workload transitions, including their performance and their ability to meet defined time budgets, and publishing the research results in peer-reviewed venues.###Your Profile###* A very good university degree (Master, Diplom, or equivalent) in Computer Science, Informatics, Business Informatics, or a related discipline is expected* The ability to develop, implement, and evaluate methods, concepts, and models, as well as the willingness to contribute actively to scientific projects.* In-depth interest in scientific problems and the motivation to conduct independent and goal-oriented research.* Knowledge of distributed systems.* Very good scientific communication and writing skills.* Very good English language skills.* Good communication and teamwork skills, curiosity, and initiative are desirable.* Experience in translating business requirements into technical and functional requirements, and collaborating with external project partners is desirable.###MSCA Eligibility Requirements###* You must not hold a doctoral degree at the date of recruitment.* You must not have lived or carried out your main activity (work or study) in Germany for more than 12 months during the 36 months immediately before recruitment. Short stays such as holidays do not count.* Applicants of all nationalities are welcome.###Our Offer###* The opportunity to pursue a doctorate* The chance to conduct research in distributed systems, edge AI, and grid-aware workload orchestration within an international research network.* Research visits at Deutsche Telekom's and at Lund University in Sweden* The opportunity to work in a collaborative and international research environment at one of Germany's leading technical universities. For further information, please contact Prof. Dr. Stefan Schulte (schulte@tu-berlin.de) or Jenny Schuster (jenny.schuster@tu-berlin.de) and see https://www.jobs.tu-berlin.de/en/job-postings/207272TU Berlin is committed to equal opportunities and diversity.
