Apply & track with Apply EdgeReporting to the Mechanical Engineering & Maintenance Department, the Engineer (BHS) is responsible for the technical supervision, performance, and reliability of all airport Baggage Handling System (BHS) mechanical equipment, including belt and roller conveyors, diverters, merges, sortation units, baggage carousels, Early Bag Storage (EBS) systems, and all related mechanical/electrical controls. The incumbent ensures safe and continuous operation of all BHS equipment in accordance with manufacturer standards, IATA/ICAO baggage handling requirements, and airport operational needs. Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- Ensures all maintenance, testing, and inspections of BHS mechanical systems comply with manufacturer standards, IATA/ICAO baggage handling guidelines, and airport regulations.
- Supervises preventive and corrective maintenance on all BHS mechanical equipment, including belt and roller conveyors, diverters and merges, sortation units (tilt-tray, cross-belt, tray-based), baggage carousels and claim units, Early Bag Storage (EBS) systems, and motors, gearboxes, drives, and bearings.
- Conducts engineering evaluations, performance assessments, and condition monitoring of BHS mechanical systems.
- Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, sensor, PLC, VFD, and control-related faults affecting BHS operation.
- Oversees installation, testing, commissioning, modernization, and refurbishment of BHS equipment.
- Manages contractor activities, supervises work quality, and ensures compliance with specifications.
- Ensures proper alignment, calibration, lubrication, and safety device functionality (E-stops, photocells, jam sensors).
- Prepares and updates technical documentation, including as-built drawings, maintenance logs, inspection records, and failure analysis reports.
- Coordinates shutdown requests and operational arrangements with Airport Operations.
- Defines spare parts, tools, and materials required for BHS systems and submits requests to HoD.
- Ensures BHS equipment rooms, tunnels, and access areas comply with safety and operational standards.
- Leads technical investigations of failures, repeated faults, and near-miss incidents.
- Supports emergency operations, including baggage jam clearance and system recovery procedures.
- Supervises BHS Mechanical Technicians and assigns tasks, preventive maintenance schedules, and daily workload.
- Prepares duty rosters, annual leave schedules, and manpower allocation plans, and ensures compliance with company HR policies within the Mechanical Section.
- Conducts technical coaching, on-the-job training, and skill development for technicians.
- Ensures proper establishment, implementation, and maintenance of QMS and EMS within the Mechanical Maintenance Section, promotes the department’s Quality and Environmental Goals, and ensures full compliance with QMS/EMS procedures and documentation requirements.
- Conducts hazard and risk assessments for BHS operations and maintenance works, and reports all hazards, near-misses, incidents, and unsafe conditions.
- Ensures strict compliance with LOTO procedures, confined space entry, and working-at-height safety.
- Ensures the handling of other necessary tasks assigned by the HoD. Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Mechatronics, or Industrial Engineering. Experience: Minimum 4–5 years’ experience in Baggage Handling Systems (BHS) maintenance or engineering. Working knowledge of BHS mechanical components and conveyor systems, with experience in major BHS OEM systems (Vanderlande, Siemens, BEUMER, Pteris Global, Daifuku). Strong understanding of PLCs, drives, motors, gearboxes, and electromechanical systems. Training Requirements: Advanced OEM BHS Maintenance Training & Control Systems Training, Mechanical & Electrical Safety, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Training. Computer Skills: MS Office Language Skills: Solid knowledge and command of written and spoken English and Arabic (desirable). Behavioral Competencies:
