Engineering Manager

About the positionBased in Gurugram, you will lead our newly established software team (currently four engineers) as we enter an exciting new phase of expansion. We are seeking an Engineering Manager who will build a strong, happy, high-performing team, creating the environment, clarity, and support that enables people to do their best work. This is a people-first role: you will have proven strength in leadership, scaling teams, and developing others. You will report to the Head of Software Product Engineering.Aurora’s mission is to help drive the energy transition through data-driven energy market intelligence and software that supports decision-makers across the power system. You will partner closely with colleagues in Oxford and across the business to help the team build customer-facing software that delivers on this mission.Our platform includes microservices and modern web applications (TypeScript/Node, React, AWS). While this is a leadership-focused role, you will still do some hands-on senior engineering work, contributing code when needed, leading by example on quality, and helping the team make sound technical decisions.You will establish the people and process foundations for an effective engineering team: regular 1:1s, coaching and feedback, inclusive ways of working, and strong delivery practices (planning, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives). A key part of the role is growing the team through hiring, attracting, assessing, and onboarding great talent in Gurugram.Key responsibilitiesLead and grow the Gurugram engineering team, creating a positive, inclusive, high-trust culture with strong team health and engagement.Hire, onboard, and retain great engineers, owning the hiring process end-to-end in partnership with HR and engineering leadership.Coach, mentor, and develop team members through 1:1s, goal setting, feedback, and growth plans; support performance management when needed.Contribute as a senior engineer: write and review code, guide architecture and technical design, and continuously raise the bar on engineering standards (testing, reliability, and maintainability).Run effective engineering processes and ceremonies (planning, daily coordination, reviews, and especially high-quality retrospectives) that drive continuous improvement and predictable delivery.Partner with Product and stakeholders to shape priorities, manage expectations, and ensure the team delivers valuable outcomes with a sustainable pace and high quality.What we are looking forRequired attributes:Strong people leadership and emotional intelligence: able to build trust, communicate clearly, handle difficult conversations, and foster psychological safety.Proven experience coaching, mentoring, and developing engineers (including regular 1:1s, feedback, goal setting, and progression support), with a genuine interest in people development.Demonstrated hiring capability: defining roles, running structured interviews, assessing both technical and behavioural skills, and making high-quality hiring decisions.Experience running effective team processes (e.g., planning, reviews, and retrospectives) and using outcomes to drive continuous improvement.Able to lead within a distributed environment and collaborate effectively with Oxford-based colleagues through proactive communication and inclusion.Experience working hands-on with our (or similar) stack: Node/TypeScript, ExpressJS, React, SQL/NoSQL, AWS and microservices.Strong organisational skills: can balance competing priorities, create clarity, and follow through on commitments.Desirable attributes:Experience using delivery metrics (e.g., DORA) to inform team practices.Experience with engineering quality practices such as unit testing and CI/CD pipelines.What we OfferA fun, informal, collaborative and international work cultureA competitive salary packageAccess to regular coaching and mentoring sessions and the opportunity to learn from experienced professionalsAccess to the Aurora Academy, our training programme offering a range of opportunities to develop your skills within the responsibilities of your role and within the wider context of the industry.Access to our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), offering a complete support network that offers expert advice and compassionate guidance 24/7/365, covering a wide range of personal and professional aspects
