Fermentation Scientist
SGInnovate · Singapore, Singapore
Apply & track with Apply EdgeThis role is posted on behalf of KINNVA, a startup supported by SGInnovate. BackgroundKinnva is a Singapore-based industrial synthetic biology startup. We pioneer the conversion of waste feedstocks and C1 molecules (CO₂, methane, methanol) into high-value biochemicals, biomaterials, and single-cell proteins via our proprietary MTPro™ microbial fermentation platform. We design circular economy solutions to decarbonize global industries and feed the future without competing with the human food chain. Kinnva is working on a pipeline of decarbonisation and biorefinery projects across the world with its EPC and CCU partners.Role SummaryThe C1 Fermentation Scientist drives biological performance within our fermentation pipeline. You will optimize gas and methanol-utilizing strains (wild and engineered). Your focus will be optimizing growth kinetics, yield, and strain robustness under industrial stresses.Key ResponsibilitiesFermentation R&D: Design and execute high-throughput benchtop fermentation trials utilizing methane, methanol, or CO₂ feedstocks.Strain Evaluation: Characterize metabolic pathways, product yields, and strain stability across multiple bacterial or fungal lines.Media Optimization: Formulate customized, cost-effective nutrient matrices and feed strategies to maximize single-cell protein density.Analytical Analytics: Run quantitative assays using HPLC, GC, and bio-analyzers to map volatile fatty acids, lipids, and target metabolites.IP Support: Document clean, accurate batch records to support data integrity and corporate intellectual property filings.Collaboration: Partner with the strain engineering and bioprocess teams to adapt lab successes into robust, scalable industrial applications.Qualifications & SkillsEducation: Ph.D. or Master’s in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or Synthetic Biology.Experience: 2+ years of hands-on experience in precision fermentation, with a deep focus on C1 fermentation or methylotrophs. Preferred: Explicit hands-on experience working with airlift bioreactors, bubble columns, or related non-mechanical mixing systems. Alternatively, you may have 3+ years handling pilot or industrial-scale bioreactors, preferably with C1 feedstocks, gas-fermentation or methylotrophic organisms.Technical Knowledge: Highly proficient in aseptic techniques, continuous culture, and gas-delivery safety mechanisms.Traits: Data-driven thinker with strong scientific writing skills and a passion for circular economy tech.Interested applicants may apply directly to DTC at: https://central.sginnovate.com/hub/marketplace/openings/e86768a0-beb7-4f40-9cd2-31b5d5721897
