Field Support Installer / Mechanic

About the Role We are looking for a technically skilled and customer-focused Field Support Installer / Mechanic to install and support Xpanner’s machine control and automation solutions across heavy construction, utility-scale solar, battery energy storage system (BESS), data centre, and mining projects throughout Australia. This is a hands-on, field-based role responsible for installing machine control systems on heavy equipment, integrating hydraulic and electrical components, and completing commissioning and functional checks before safely handing systems over to customers. You will diagnose and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues throughout the project lifecycle and provide ongoing technical support to help customers and site teams operate Xpanner’s solutions safely and reliably. What You’ll Do Install and commission Xpanner’s machine control and automation systems on excavators, dozers, graders, and other heavy equipment in accordance with installation procedures and safety requirements. Install and connect hydraulic valves, hoses, pumps, manifolds, and control interfaces, integrating them with the machine’s hydraulic systems. Install wiring harnesses, sensors, and control units, and integrate them with machine CAN bus, power, and electrical systems using the relevant wiring diagrams. Conduct post-installation functional and performance checks to confirm that systems operate in accordance with specifications and safety requirements before handing them over to operators and site teams. Provide on-site technical support and fault diagnosis throughout the project lifecycle, resolving mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues efficiently under field conditions. Deliver practical handover training to equipment operators and site teams, covering system controls, safety procedures, and basic troubleshooting. Collect structured feedback from customers and project sites, maintain accurate installation and support records, and collaborate with Sales, Operations, and R&D teams to improve the product and customer experience. Support the development of standardised installation procedures, checklists, technical documentation, and knowledge base resources to build a scalable field support capability as Xpanner’s Australian operations grow. Basic Qualifications 5+ years of hands-on experience installing, commissioning, or maintaining machine control, hydraulic, or electrical systems on excavators, dozers, graders, or similar heavy equipment. Practical experience installing, diagnosing, and servicing hydraulic systems, including valves, hoses, pumps, manifolds, and control circuits. Experience reading wiring diagrams, routing and terminating cables, and integrating sensors, control units, and electrical systems on heavy equipment. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to independently diagnose and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults under field conditions and time constraints. Sound understanding of health, safety, and risk management requirements in heavy equipment environments, including safe isolation and lockout/tagout procedures. Ability to manage multiple installation and support jobs with minimal supervision and work independently in remote or regional field environments. A proactive approach to learning new technologies and developing expertise in evolving automation and machine control systems. Willingness and ability to travel frequently to customer project sites across Australia. Preferred Qualifications A trade certificate, diploma, formal training, or equivalent practical experience in hydraulics, electrical systems, electrotechnology, heavy equipment mechanics, or a related field, such as a Certificate III or IV. Experience installing and calibrating machine control platforms such as Trimble, Leica, Topcon, or equivalent systems. Experience integrating robotics or automation systems on heavy equipment, including CAN bus interfaces, sensors, and actuator control systems. Field installation or maintenance experience across heavy construction, utility-scale solar, BESS, data centre, or mining projects, desirable. A current forklift licence, elevated work platform (EWP) licence, or other relevant plant and equipment licences or tickets. Familiarity with telematics platforms, advanced machine attachments such as Tilt Rotators, or retrofit automation systems for heavy equipment. Experience working in a field-based role within a start-up or early-stage technology company. An established professional network within Australia’s heavy construction, mining, or construction technology sectors.
