Apply & track with Apply EdgeControllerLocation: Crystal Lake, IL 60014Employment Type: Full-TimePrimary Purpose of PositionThe Controller is responsible for overseeing, preparing, analyzing, and distributing the company's consolidated financial statements. This role manages the monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes, including variance analysis, to ensure accurate, timely, and relevant financial reporting.The Controller will work closely with management to achieve company performance metrics, including expense management and job profitability.ResponsibilitiesProvide monthly reporting of company financial results by the 10th of the following month, including general ledger and account reconciliations, fixed asset depreciation schedules, inventory controls, comparative and budgetary financial analysis, banking, and cash flow.Build and evaluate cost accounting structures across business areas, identify inefficiencies, and implement cost improvements with department managers.Create, monitor, and report on budgetary controls and provide financial analytics covering financial, cost, production, operational, and budgetary performance.Improve the efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness of accounting functions and internal controls, including purchasing/accounts payable, billing/accounts receivable, cost accounting, and financial reporting.Lead ERP implementation and optimization initiatives to improve financial reporting accuracy and efficiency.Coordinate with third-party IT service providers and oversee information systems hardware, networking, and software services.Document and maintain workflows and processes for Finance and Accounting functions while ensuring an appropriate systems and control environment.Lead day-to-day accounting and reporting functions and supervise accounting staff.Lead annual insurance evaluations and renewal processes for liability, property and casualty, and workers' compensation insurance.Manage compliance activities, including leases, regulatory compliance, contract renewals, service agreements, IFTA reporting, and license plate renewals.Manage risk and accounts receivable collections.Approve and deposit checks and manage positive pay processes.Prepare documentation for external auditors.Collaborate with operational department heads to develop P&L statements for each business unit, location, and job.Review financial statements for accuracy and legal compliance, including balance sheets and P&L statements.Prepare and sign off on lien waivers and approve credit applications.Maintain equipment records and analyze current portions of long-term debt in relation to current assets.Complete sales tax returns and real estate tax payments.Reconcile bank statements and loans.Manage cash flow and intercompany allocations.Serve as a liaison with Human Resources, providing support for payroll, benefits administration, personnel updates, and company policies.Work with senior leadership to support short- and long-term investment objectives, including business growth, acquisition strategies, and potential divestiture activities.Develop capital strategies and structures that support balanced financial and operational performance.Performance ExpectationsCommunicate effectively with coworkers and management regarding company finances and financial recommendations.Demonstrate strong numerical proficiency, organization, problem-solving, and logical reasoning skills.Maintain a strong understanding of accounting processes and financial data analysis.Demonstrate excellent leadership skills and a big-picture approach to business challenges.Maintain working knowledge of national and local tax regulations and compliance requirements.Translate complex financial concepts into clear information for managers at all levels.Demonstrate strong financial project management skills.Delegate responsibilities effectively.Serve as a role model for a positive and progressive company culture.Must-Have QualificationsIndustry experience in aggregate construction, construction materials, logistics, transportation, or related industries.CPA or CA certification.Public accounting experience.Strong cost accounting and financial reporting experience.Proven experience managing accounting teams and financial operations.Experience with ERP implementation or optimization is highly preferred.Preferred Industry BackgroundCandidates with experience in the following environments are encouraged to apply:Transportation and logisticsAggregate and construction materialsRegional trucking and fleet operationsFreight brokerageBulk haulingManufacturingMid-sized manufacturers with strong cost accounting environmentsConstruction materials producersIndustrial manufacturing organizations
