This position leads both fleet operations and fleet safety, including oversight of the Fleet Safety Officer, while maintaining accountability for vehicle lifecycle, maintenance, utilization, cost management, driver safety, compliance, and overall fleet performance.This role oversees the full vehicle lifecycle, including acquisition, upfitting, assignment, maintenance, repair, registration, fuel management, utilization, replacement, and disposal. The Fleet Manager works closely with operational departments to ensure vehicles are reliable, properly equipped, cost-effective, and available to meet the needs of the business.SVM’s fleet supports a highly mobile workforce, including 100+ Service Technicians operating company vehicles throughout their workday, material-expediting drivers traveling between jobsites and vendor yards, and construction and operational teams throughout the Bay Area and Sacramento areas.WHAT YOU WILL DOFleet Operations & AdministrationManage the day-to-day operations of SVM’s approximately 500-vehicle fleet.Oversee vehicle assignments, transfers, returns, inventory, and availability.Maintain accurate vehicle records, including registration, licensing, mileage, assignments, equipment, and vehicle status.Coordinate vehicle needs with Service, Construction, Purchasing, Warehouse, and other operational teams.Establish consistent fleet processes and standards across the organization.Fleet Budget & Cost ManagementDevelop and manage annual fleet operating and vehicle replacement budgets.Track and analyze fleet costs, including acquisition, leasing, fuel, maintenance, repairs, rentals, upfitting, registration, and disposal.Monitor total cost of ownership, cost per vehicle/mile, utilization, maintenance costs, and downtime to identify trends and improvement opportunities.Analyze fuel consumption, fuel card activity, and spending trends.Identify underutilized, high-cost, or high-maintenance vehicles and recommend appropriate action.Forecast fleet needs and capital requirements based on hiring, growth, vehicle lifecycle, and operational demand.Provide regular budget-to-actual, cost, utilization, and replacement forecasts to leadership.Vehicle Maintenance & RepairsOversee preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, recalls, and vehicle downtime.Ensure maintenance schedules and required services are completed timely.Review significant repairs and make repair-versus-replace recommendations based on cost, condition, and operational needs.Minimize vehicle downtime and coordinate temporary or replacement vehicles when necessary.Ensure vehicles remain reliable, properly maintained, and available to support operations.Fleet Acquisition & LifecycleManage vehicle acquisition, upfitting, deployment, replacement, and disposal.Develop replacement plans based on age, mileage, condition, utilization, repair history, and total cost of ownership.Establish vehicle specifications and upfitting standards based on operational needs.Identify opportunities to standardize vehicle types and equipment across the fleet.Coordinate vehicle procurement and deployment with operational and workforce needs.Fuel, Utilization & Cost ManagementOversee company fuel card programs and monitor fuel usage and exceptions.Track fleet expenses, including fuel, maintenance, repairs, rentals, registrations, and vehicle acquisition.Monitor vehicle mileage and utilization to identify underutilized or high-cost assets.Develop fleet metrics and reporting to support budgeting and operational decisions.Identify opportunities to reduce fleet costs while maintaining operational readiness.Fleet Systems, Vendors & ComplianceManage fleet management systems and maintain accurate vehicle, maintenance, assignment, and utilization data.Manage fleet vendors, including dealerships, repair facilities, upfitters, tire providers, towing, rental, fuel, and other vehicle-related services.Negotiate pricing and service expectations and monitor vendor performance, cost, and turnaround times.Ensure vehicle registrations, permits, inspections, and other required documentation remain current and audit-ready.Partner with IT and Fleet Safety on telematics, GPS, dashcam hardware, and other vehicle technology.Evaluate fleet systems and technology that improve efficiency, visibility, and asset management.Fleet Safety & Risk ManagementProvide leadership and oversight of SVM’s fleet safety program and Fleet Safety Officer.Establish fleet safety expectations, performance standards, policies, and priorities across the organization.Oversee driver qualification, training, telematics monitoring, coaching, and accident-prevention programs administered by the Fleet Safety Officer.Review significant vehicle incidents, recurring driver trends, and preventability findings to ensure appropriate corrective action.Monitor fleet safety performance and identify opportunities to reduce accidents, unsafe driving behaviors, and overall fleet risk.Partner with Safety, HR, Operations, and department leadership to maintain consistent accountability for fleet safety.Ensure fleet operations and driver programs comply with company, DMV, DOT, state, and federal requirements.Leadership & ReportingLead, mentor, and develop the Fleet Safety Officer and fleet operations personnel, establishing clear responsibilities and performance expectations.Maintain accountability for the overall performance of SVM’s fleet operations and safety program.Develop and monitor fleet KPIs, including utilization, maintenance compliance, downtime, operating costs, preventable incidents, and driver safety performance.Provide regular operational, financial, and safety reporting to leadership.Drive continuous improvement in fleet efficiency, cost management, safety, and service levels.Serve as SVM’s primary internal leader for fleet operations and vehicle-related matters.Key Measures of SuccessFleet availability and vehicle uptime.Preventive maintenance compliance.Reduction in unnecessary performance and responsiveness.Ability to meet the vehicle needs of SVM’s field and service operations.EDUCATION SKILLS & EXPERIENCE ✓ 5+ years of fleet, transportation, or vehicle operations management experience required.✓ Proven experience managing a large commercial fleet; experience with 200+ vehicles required, with 400+ strongly preferred.✓ Experience managing fleet acquisition, maintenance, repair, lifecycle planning, vehicle utilization, and disposal.✓ Strong understanding of commercial vehicle maintenance, preventive maintenance programs, and fleet operating practices.✓ Experience managing vehicle vendors, fuel programs, fleet budgets, and cost-analysis reporting.✓ Experience with fleet management software, GPS/telematics systems, and vehicle asset data.✓ Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate utilization, maintenance trends, operating costs, and total cost of ownership.✓ Knowledge of applicable DMV, DOT, California vehicle, registration, and fleet compliance requirements.✓ Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to support multiple operational departments and priorities.✓ Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Outlook, and Word; experience with Power BI or similar reporting tools a plus.✓ Valid California Driver’s License and willingness to submit to applicable DMV/MVR review required.✓ NAFA Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) strongly preferred; if not held at hire, ability to obtain within 18 months of assignment preferred.COMPENSATION & COMPANY BENEFITS INCLUDE This is a full-time exempt position.
