Heavy Equipment Electrical Engineer

The Heavy Equipment Electrical Specialist is responsible for the advanced diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair, and configuration of complex electrical and electronic systems on heavy construction machinery. This role ensures optimal machine performance, safety, and minimal downtime by managing multiplexed wiring networks, sensors, and electronic control units (ECUs). While working across various heavy equipment brands, a strong specialization and technical familiarity with Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) systems is highly preferred. Additionally, the role requires integrated knowledge of hydraulic systems to effectively diagnose modern, electro-hydraulic machinery

Duties and Responsibilities

Diagnostic Troubleshooting: Perform advanced electrical diagnostics on heavy machinery using digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and specialized software to isolate open circuits, short circuits, and communication faults System Programming & Calibration: Configure, calibrate, and program electronic control units (ECUs), displays, and safety systems following component replacements or software updates Schematic Interpretation: Read, analyze, and accurately interpret complex electrical wiring diagrams, circuit schematics, and technical network architecture maps Hydraulic Integration: Diagnose and repair electrical faults directly impacting hydraulic control systems, including electronic proportional valves, solenoids, pressure sensors, and joysticks Harness & Component Repair: Rebuild, repair, or replace damaged wiring harnesses, connectors, fuse panels, alternators, starter motors, and electronic sensors to OEM standards Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of all electrical modifications, software versions, and diagnostic logs using the company's asset managementSkills and Competencies: Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of DC electrical systems (12V/24V), CAN-bus networks (J1939), multiplexing, and electronic control topologies Hydraulic Proficiency: Strong fundamental understanding of fluid power principles, electro-hydraulic valves, and how electrical signals drive hydraulic functions Analytical Thinking: Exceptional problem-solving skills with the ability to trace multi-system faults across complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic interfaces Precision Tools: Proficient in using specialized diagnostic laptops, electronic scanners, communication adapters, and precision testing equipment Safety & Compliance: Thorough understanding of electrical safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, battery handling safety, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protectionRequirementsEducation: Diploma or technical certification in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Automotive Electrics, or a related technical fieldExperience: Minimum of five years of hands-on experience as an auto-electrical technician working specifically with heavy construction equipment (e.g., excavators, wheel loaders, articulated haulers)Brand Specialization: Proven track record working with Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) systems and diagnostic software (e.g., Volvo Tech Tool) is strongly preferredCertifications: Certified Heavy Equipment Electrical Technician or equivalent industry-recognized electronics certification is highly advantageousPhysical Requirements:Ability to work in restricted or awkward physical positions while tracing wiring behind panels or under cabsCapability to work in diverse environmental conditions, including both workshop settings and outdoor field locations
