This supportive atmosphere creates a collaborative environment for educators and staff.Role Description The High School Band Director is a full-time, on-site position located in Birmingham, AL. The Band Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all aspects of the high school band program, including concert band, marching band, pep band, and small ensembles. Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and implementing rehearsals, selecting appropriate repertoire, preparing students for performances, and coordinating participation in school events, competitions, and community activities. The role involves collaborating with school leadership, other arts educators, and families to promote student growth, as well as overseeing inventory, maintenance of instruments, uniforms, and equipment. The Band Director is also expected to uphold district policies, maintain accurate records, support student recruitment and retention, and foster a safe, inclusive learning environment for all students.Qualifications Demonstrated skills in band direction and music education, including ensemble rehearsal techniques, score study, and performance preparation.Strong musicianship skills such as conducting, instrumental pedagogy (especially wind, brass, and percussion), and music literacy.Ability to design engaging instructional plans, assess student progress, and adapt teaching strategies to diverse learning needs.Experience organizing performances, events, and marching band activities, including drill design or coordination with outside specialists.Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with students, colleagues, families, and community partners.Strong classroom and rehearsal management skills, with a commitment to creating an inclusive, respectful, and encouraging environment.Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or a related field; eligibility for or possession of appropriate state teaching certification.Willingness to work flexible hours as needed for rehearsals, performances, and school events, and to participate in ongoing professional development.Experience in a school band setting or similar youth music program is preferred.
