The ELA Department Chair will teach rigorous high school English Language Arts courses while leading the department’s curriculum, assessment, instructional planning, professional learning, and continuous-improvement efforts.The ideal candidate is an excellent classroom teacher who is equally committed to developing others. Our work is grounded in teamwork, courage, community, and integrity.CORE RESPONSIBILITIESTeaching and Instruction• Plan and deliver rigorous, engaging, standards-aligned high school ELA instruction.• Develop students’ skills in reading comprehension, literary analysis, evidence-based writing, research, discussion, and communication.• Teach diverse, culturally responsive texts that encourage students to examine multiple perspectives.• Design lessons that promote critical thinking, collaboration, student voice, and independent learning.• Use student work and assessment data to adjust instruction and provide targeted support.• Differentiate for students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and students with varied academic needs while maintaining high expectations.• Provide timely, actionable feedback that strengthens students’ reading and writing.• Prepare students for common assessments and the New York State ELA Regents examination.• Establish a structured, safe, inclusive, and intellectually engaging classroom environment.Department and Instructional Leadership• Plan and facilitate weekly ELA department meetings focused on data-driven inquiry, student work, planning, and professional learning.• Guide teachers through structured student-data and Looking at Student Work protocols.• Lead curriculum mapping, pacing, unit planning, and alignment across ELA courses and grade levels.• Support the use of Renaissance DnA and other assessment tools to analyze and respond to student-performance data.• Facilitate department-wide common assessments at least three times during the school year.• Monitor progress toward department and schoolwide goals and identify priorities for intervention and enrichment.• Participate in learning walks and classroom observations in consultation with the Principal and Assistant Principal.• Coach teachers through cycles that may include goal-setting, co-planning, modeling, observation, feedback, and reflection.• Identify teacher and student needs and design differentiated professional development.• Serve as a model teacher and, when appropriate, open the classroom for peer observation and instructional modeling.• Support the school’s instructional-improvement plan and evaluate the impact of high-leverage strategies.Collaboration and Schoolwide Leadership• Collaborate with the Principal, Assistant Principal, instructional leadership team, fellow department chairs, and network-level coaches.• Promote alignment in curriculum, instructional rigor, assessment, interventions, and pedagogy.• Represent the ELA department in schoolwide planning and academic decision-making.• Assist with interviewing candidates for ELA instructional vacancies.• Support Regents preparation and scoring, after-school academic support, and Saturday test-preparation programming.• Tutor during at least two sessions within each applicable Saturday School test-preparation cycle.• Help inform course placement, intervention, enrichment, and academic-programming decisions.• Communicate department priorities, progress, celebrations, and needs clearly.• Lead alongside colleagues through shared ownership, accountability, and trust.Students, Families, and School Community• Build authentic relationships with students while maintaining clear, consistent, and equitable expectations.• Hold a high bar for effort, persistence, participation, critical thinking, and quality of work.• Create opportunities for student voice, choice, collaboration, and leadership.• Respond to student behavior calmly and consistently, treating mistakes as opportunities for growth.• Develop trust-based relationships with families and communicate proactively about student progress.• Collaborate with special education teachers, counselors, clinicians, deans, and other staff to meet the needs of every learner.• Champion an inclusive environment in which students and adults feel valued, challenged, and supported.Professional and Leadership Responsibilities• Maintain accurate records related to attendance, grading, assessment, progress monitoring, and family communication.• Participate actively in school- and network-wide professional development and instructional-leadership meetings.• Reflect on instructional and leadership practice and respond constructively to feedback.• Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.• Support schoolwide responsibilities as directed by the Principal, Assistant Principal, and Dean.• Be available for the equivalent of five additional summer workdays for leadership development, curriculum planning, pacing, and related responsibilities.QUALIFICATIONSStrong candidates will demonstrate:• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university;
