Java Developer

About the role: You will be responsible for remediating and modernizing enterprise Java applications, ensuring they operate reliably end-to-end—from low-level design through secure, high-quality code—on the latest Java platform. You will join a fast-paced, high-performing engineering team supporting large-scale technology remediation and digital transformation initiatives. Using your engineering expertise, you will analyze, refactor, and upgrade existing Java applications, addressing technical debt, security vulnerabilities, and platform compatibility issues.Key Responsibilities:Perform Java remediation activities including code refactoring, dependency upgrades, and replacement of deprecated or removed APIs introduced since Java 8.Build and enhance data and application services exposed via REST APIs and events, ensuring performance, scalability, and security post-migration.Provide accurate technical estimates and contribute to technical planning.Apply secure coding and DevSecOps practices, remediating vulnerabilities identified by tools such as Snyk and Checkmarx as part of the CI/CD pipeline.Contribute to application pipelines and engineering frameworks to improve reliability, observability, and maintainability of remediated systems.Work closely with cross-functional and geographically distributed teams, including Canadian IT teams, using agile delivery methodologies to deliver Java-based remediation outcomes with minimal business disruption.Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and migration planning to ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture and governance standards.Operate in a Shift-Left testing environment and prioritize writing efficient, tested and clear code Participate in improving the supportability and transparency of the applications and services we build by creating clear and comprehensive documentation, monitoring/alert systems and centralized loggingAble to communicate well with the team for technical arguments and suggest ideas for improvement. Able to prepare high-level and detailed-level designs based on technical/business requirements and defined architecture and maintain documentation Analyze, define and document requirements for data, workflow, logical processes, interface design, internal and external checks, controls, and outputsEnsure information security standards and requirements are incorporated into all solutionsStay current with trends in emerging technologies and how they could apply to Sun Life.Experience:A Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or related field.5-8 years of progressive information technology experience with full application development life cycle.Domain knowledge of Insurance or financial services.Prior hands-on experience in large scale application modernization or platform upgrade programStrong proficiency in Java 1.8 or higher. Strong on basics – exception handling, modularization, etc. Nice to have skills:Exposure to Ansible for configuration management and Continuous delivery director or similar CI/CD schools.Knowledge of Struts and EJB for migration scenarios.Hands on experience with Apache Kafka.Location: Gurugram
