Our client is an established sports data analytics business, creating powerful statistical models with huge value across sports performance, wellbeing, betting and other industries.They are looking for a technically minded and practically capable Junior Software & Data Engineer to join their team with a focus around advancing their sports betting solutions. This role would suit a recent graduate or early-career candidate who enjoys solving real-world technical problems, working across different technologies, and understanding how complete systems operate. You will work across software development, data, cloud infrastructure and live sports systems.Key Responsibilities• Develop, test and maintain software using technologies such as Python, Go and TypeScript.• Work with sports data, including processing, analysing and validating live and historical datasets.• Assist with the development and operation of cloud-based systems and services.• Investigate bugs, system failures and unexpected data or application behaviour.• Write and maintain SQL queries and work with relational databases.• Build, run and troubleshoot containerised applications using Docker.• Monitor application and infrastructure performance.• Support integrations between internal systems, APIs, databases and third-party data providers.• Contribute to technical design discussions and help identify practical, maintainable solutions.• Understand how individual components interact as part of a wider production system.• Produce clear documentation for systems, processes and technical decisions.Essential Skills and Experience• A degree in a technical or numerate subject, such as:Computer ScienceInformation TechnologyMathematicsPhysicsEngineering Data ScienceAnother related discipline• A good understanding of operating systems, computer infrastructure and how software runs in real-world environments.• An understanding of programming principles and experience with at least one programming language.• Exposure to Python, Go or a TypeScript-based technology stack.• Knowledge of databases and the ability to write basic SQL queries.• Strong debugging, analytical and problem-solving skills.• The ability to break down unfamiliar problems and investigate them methodically.• A practical mindset and an interest in understanding the complete system rather than focusing only on one isolated component.• A reasonable understanding of sport and an interest in how technology and data can be applied within sports.• Good written and verbal communication skills.Desirable Skills• Knowledge of Amazon Web Services, particularly services such as EC2, ECS, S3, RDS, Lambda and CloudWatch.• Experience using Docker or other containerisation technologies.• Personal, academic or professional data science projects.• Experience working with APIs, live data feeds or WebSockets.• Familiarity with Linux or command-line environments.• Experience using Git and collaborative software development workflows.• Knowledge of data analysis libraries such as pandas, NumPy or similar tools.• An understanding of statistics, probability or predictive modelling.• Experience with cloud infrastructure, networking or application deployment.What They Are Looking ForYou should be able to look beyond an individual piece of code and consider the wider picture, including:• Where data comes from and where it goes.• How applications communicate with each other.• How software is deployed and operated.• What happens when part of a system fails.• How to identify the underlying cause of a problem.• Whether a proposed solution will work reliably in a production environment.Examples of personal projects, university projects, internships, technical hobbies or practical problem-solving experience are highly valued.What We Offer• Exposure to software engineering, data science and cloud infrastructure.• The opportunity to work with live sports systems and real-world data.• The chance to take ownership of meaningful technical projects.• Opportunities to develop skills across Python, Go, TypeScript, AWS, SQL and Docker.• A role with broad technical exposure.
