Operating in a fast-paced development lab, you will be responsible for preparing precise test specimens, conducting rigorous physical and thermal characterisation on trial materials, and managing critical laboratory equipment. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented individual with hands-on testing experience who thrives in a dynamic material science environment.The position is based in London in the UK, with the candidate expected to be in our North Acton office location 5 days per week.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES The role’s primary responsibilities are listed, but not limited to the below:Material Characterisation and Analytical Testing:Thermal Analysis: Program, run, and analyze samples using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) to evaluate polymer melting points, crystallinity, and thermal stability.Rheological & Melt Flow Testing: Perform Melt Flow Index (MFI) and Melt Flow Rate (MFR) tests on trial compounds to characterize polymer processability.Physical & Mechanical Testing: Conduct tensile, flexural, and impact testing using universal testing machines to evaluate material strength, elongation, and toughness.Moisture & Density Analysis: Utilize moisture analyzers and density balances to perform crucial QC checks on incoming raw materials and finished masterbatches.Sample Preparation and Quality Control:Specimen Preparation: Prepare physical testing specimens (tensile bars, impact discs) through precision cutting, milling, or conditioning according to standard ASTM/ISO testing frameworks.Data Logging & Documentation: Meticulously record all raw testing data, maintain digital laboratory notebooks, and generate clear, structured data summaries for the R&D and engineering teams.Laboratory Safety, Maintenance & Inventory:Equipment Calibration: Perform routine calibration, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting on analytical instruments (TGA, DSC, MFI, and mechanical testers).COSHH & Chemical Management: Actively manage chemical inventory, maintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and ensure the laboratory complies with COSHH and general health and safety standards.Housekeeping: Maintain an immaculate, organized, and safe laboratory workspace, practicing strict 5S principles.REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCEThis role will report to the Polymer Processing Team Leader and is expected to have / be:Degree, HND, or equivalent qualification in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.1–3 years of hands-on experience in a materials testing or analytical laboratory environment, ideally within the polymers, plastics, or compounding sector.Direct experience running DSC, TGA, MFI, and mechanical testing equipment is highly desirable. Excellent computer literacy (Excel/data plotting) is required.Meticulous attention to detail, strong organisational skills, and a proactive attitude toward lab safety and cleanliness.
