Lead AI Engineer

Our client is one of Europe’s largest insurance brokerage groups - €500m revenue, 2,500+ employees and and 120+ companies across its portfolio. Owned by the private equity house behind Klarna, TeamViewer and McAfee.They’re building a central AI transformation team in Germany to re-engineer and standardise processes across their 120 portfolio companies using AI-native technology.Role Overview:You’ll join as a Lead AI Engineer with CTO-level scope - becoming one of the first engineers in a new 8-person AI transformation function and taking large scale AI products from raw business problem to production.Key ResponsibilitiesOwn AI projects end to end, from problem definition and architecture through to production.Build agentic systems using custom harnesses rather than relying solely on off-the-shelf orchestration.Ship the complete product around them - frontend, backend and agent layer.Build the evals, monitoring and error handling required to keep AI systems reliable in production.Set the engineering standards and technical foundations that a new AI team will be built on.QualificationsStrong experience building and shipping software in production.Deep hands-on AI experience across inference, agentic systems and custom harnesses.Full-stack capability spanning frontend, backend and the agent layer.Experience shipping evals, monitoring and error handling into live AI systems - not just prototypes.Comfortable integrating modern applications with legacy backends and complex data models.Able to operate with significant autonomy, ambiguity and ownership.If you want to build AI systems that change how 120+ businesses operate - starting from a blank sheet of paper, complete technical ownership and the opportunity to shape an engineering function from day one - we’d love to hear from you.
