Lead Data Engineer

Summary:Tokio Marine Highland (TMH) is modernizing its enterprise data platform to better support reporting, analytics, operational decision-making, and future AI capabilities across the organization.We are seeking a hands-on Lead Data Engineer with Property & Casualty insurance experience and demonstrated people leadership experience to lead the design, development, and evolution of our Snowflake platform. This is a unique opportunity to help build the foundation of TMH's modern data platform—not simply maintain an existing environment. You'll play a key role in shaping the platform architecture, establishing engineering standards, and developing the scalable data capabilities that will support the business for years to come.This role combines deep technical expertise with direct people leadership, including responsibility for leading, coaching, and developing a small team of Data Engineers, while remaining actively involved in solution design and technical delivery.

Location: Chicago, IL preferred, with a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week in the office.

Fully remote candidates located elsewhere in the U.S. may also be considered.Key ResponsibilitiesLead the design, development, and ongoing evolution of TMH's enterprise Snowflake platform.Design scalable data pipelines, data models, and reusable engineering frameworks that support reporting, analytics, and business operations.Establish engineering standards and best practices for data quality, governance, testing, deployment, and platform performance.Modernize fragmented and legacy data environments by implementing scalable, cloud-native data engineering solutions.Partner with Technology and business stakeholders to deliver trusted, enterprise data solutions.Lead, coach, and develop a small team of Data Engineers while fostering collaboration and technical excellence.Contribute hands-on to architecture, solution design, and technical implementation.What You'll BringProperty & Casualty insurance industry experience is required, with an understanding of core insurance data domains such as policy administration, underwriting, claims, billing, finance, and operational reporting.Demonstrated people leadership experience, including direct responsibility for leading, coaching, developing, and providing performance feedback to technical team members.Extensive experience designing, implementing, and optimizing enterprise Snowflake platforms, with experience serving as a technical lead or platform owner.Strong technical proficiency in SQL, Python, dbt, AWS, and cloud-native data engineering, including data modeling, ELT processes, and enterprise data warehousing.Experience modernizing fragmented or legacy data ecosystems through scalable cloud-based data solutions.Experience establishing engineering standards and applying modern software engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, infrastructure as code, and observability.Strong communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to partner effectively with both technical teams and business stakeholders.Work Authorization:Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorshipPreferred QualificationsSnowPro Core or Advanced Certification.Experience in a Specialty, MGA, or Reinsurance environment.At TMH, you'll have the opportunity to help build a modern enterprise data platform while influencing technical direction, engineering standards, and the continued growth of the data engineering team.Additional Job Details:The pay range for this role is: $150,000 - 180,000. This range reflects a good faith estimate of pay at the time of posting.
