Apply & track with Apply EdgeLecturer I – Human-Centered Engineering Design (HCED)The Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering (IMSE) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is seeking a part-time Lecturer I in Human-Centered Engineering Design to teach undergraduate courses in product development, engineering design, and physical prototyping.This role combines classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory activities and student project mentorship. The successful candidate will help students move through the full product-development cycle—from concept and design to prototyping, fabrication, testing, and iteration.The position is based in person in Dearborn, Michigan, with opportunities for longer-term progression within the Lecturer track.ResponsibilitiesTeach undergraduate HCED 380 and HCED 450 courses in product development and physical prototyping.Deliver classroom and hands-on laboratory instruction.Mentor student design projects through concept development, prototyping, fabrication, testing, and technical troubleshooting.Support rapid-prototyping technologies, including FDM/SLA 3D printing, laser cutting/etching, waterjet cutting, and microcontroller-based prototyping. Assist with laboratory operations, equipment, supplies, and safety.Collaborate with faculty to continuously improve course content and align it with emerging industry practices.Assess student projects, coursework, and learning outcomes.QualificationsMaster's degree or PhD in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial & Manufacturing, Systems, Design, or a closely related field).At least 5 years of professional engineering experience in industry or applied research.At least 3 years of hands-on product-development experience.Experience with engineering project management.Strong communication and mentoring skills.Experience with FDM/SLA additive manufacturing, Arduino/microcontrollers, laser cutting, waterjet cutting, fabrication, intellectual property, and/or engineering education is highly desirable.
