About the RoleThis newly created role will provide Business and Legal Affairs support to Sony Music Publishing Asia with a focus on advising affiliates on drafting and negotiating music publishing agreements with local songwriters and record labels, as well as collaborating and supporting global digital team on negotiations with Digital Service Platforms across Asia regionWhat You’ll Do: (job responsibilities)Lead negotiation, drafting, and execution of a wide range of agreements across Asia regionMusic publishing agreements (including exclusive songwriter agreements, admin agreements and single song agreements) with local songwriters and record labelsAcquisitions of music publishing catalogues including, conducting and supervising legal due diligence with respect to catalogue acquisitions, and drafting and negotiation acquisition agreementsSynchronization licensesSample / adaptation agreementsVendor, procurement & other contractsCompliance & risk managementEnsure compliance with applicable laws and regulations across multiple Asia jurisdictionsOversee regulatory matters, including licensing, data privacy, consumer protection, and industry-specific requirementsConduct research on Asian case law on music publishing as requiredImplement and monitor corporate governance and internal compliance policiesHandle any requirements for boards/resolutions and other corporate maintenance documentationDispute resolution & risk mitigationManage disputes, claims, and litigation in collaboration with external counselManage copyright infringement claims with International legal & business affair team membersAct as a trusted advisor to regional commercial leaders and country team to support strategic planning and regional expansion initiativesCollaborate with Global Digital team, support for drafting, reviewing and negotiating on publishing & Digital Servic Platforms (DSP) agreements across Asia region.Act as the key legal liaison, providing negotiation support and regional expertise on DSP agreements, while coordinating with the Global Digital team and CASH on deals that are negotiated centrally or as part of broader multi-territory arrangements.Co-work with local and global team, involving and handling digital matters at society level across Asia regionAttending negotiation meetings. Ensuring deals are concluded in a professional and timely mannerResponding to Ad-Hoc legal requests from various other departmentsCoordinating external counsel as requiredProviding regular updates to the VP, International Legal & Business Affairs on deals, legal & compliance mattersWho You Are: (skills/experience/qualifications in order of importance)Essential requirementsEducation: LLB. Admitted to practice in Hong KongPost qualification experience of a minimum of 5 years. Experience in a similar role either in the music or media and entertainment industry.Thorough knowledge of intellectual property, copyright, entertainment and media laws. The ability to analyze complex legal problems quickly and concisely.Solution-oriented approach to problems.Prides oneself on accuracy and attention to detail. Able to collaborate and work effectively as part of a team to achieve shared objectives / deadlines.Prioritizes workload, manages self and follows through on tasks so that deadlines are met in the most efficient and effective way.Excellent communication skills, able to interact confidently and effectively at all levels of the business.Able to communicate ideas/information in a clear and constructive way, especially legal information.Consistently looking for improvements and motivated to recommend changes to processes and procedures.Good time management and ensure that deals close in agreed timelines.
