Lifeguard

Primary objective:The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all students, staff, and visitors using the school's swimming pool and aquatic facilities at all times. The post holder maintains constant, vigilant supervision of the pool area, enforces pool safety rules, and responds immediately and effectively to any emergency, providing first aid and water rescue as required.The Lifeguard works closely with the Sports Department and Physical Education staff to support the safe delivery of swimming lessons, sports events, and pool-based activities, while maintaining the cleanliness, hygiene, and safety standards of the aquatic facility in line with Misk Schools' policies.Areas of responsibility:Maintain continuous, active supervision of the swimming pool and surrounding areas during all lessons, training sessions, and open swim times.Enforce pool rules, safety regulations, and capacity limits at all times, ensuring the safety of all students, staff, and visitors.Respond immediately to emergencies, providing first aid, CPR, and water rescue as required, and escalate to medical support when necessary. Conduct regular water quality checks (chlorine level, pH, temperature) and report any issues to the Sports Department/Facilities team promptly.Ensure all pool safety equipment (rescue tubes, first aid kit, AED) is present, in good working order, and accessible at all times.Support PE teachers and swim instructors during lessons by actively monitoring students in and around the pool.Check and verify students' swimming ability level before permitting access to deep-water areas, in line with school policy.Maintain accurate incident, accident, and near-miss logs, and report them to the line manager without delay.Ensure the pool deck, changing rooms, and surrounding areas are kept clean, tidy, and free of hazards.Carry out daily opening and closing safety checks of the pool and aquatic facilities.Support the safe organisation and running of swimming galas, sports days, and other aquatic events.Attend mandatory lifeguard certification renewals, CPR/first aid refresher courses, and safeguarding training as required.Ensure strict adherence to child safeguarding and protection procedures at all times, given direct and regular supervisory contact with students.Undertake additional duties as and when reasonably required by the line manager.Safeguarding:The post holder will be required to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people and follow the school's safeguarding policies and the staff code of conduct, given their direct and regular contact with students. They will directly support the designated safeguarding lead as a priority to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students at the school.

Qualifications

Valid Lifeguard Certification (e.g. RLSS, NPLQ, StarGuard, or equivalent national/international body) (essential).Valid First Aid and CPR/AED certification (essential).High school diploma or equivalent (essential); further education or vocational training in sports/aquatics (desirable).Water Safety Instructor certification (desirable).Experience:+1 year of experience working as a certified lifeguard, preferably in a school or public aquatic facility (essential).Experience working with children and young people in a supervisory capacity (desirable).Experience responding to real emergency or rescue situations (desirable).Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:Strong swimming ability and water rescue skills.High level of vigilance, concentration, and ability to remain alert for extended periods.Calm, quick, and effective decision-making under pressure.Excellent communication skills with students, staff, and parents.Good physical fitness and stamina.Basic understanding of pool chemistry and water quality standards.Ability to work flexible hours, including before/after school hours and weekends, when required for events.Commitment to child safeguarding and welfare.
