Company Description The Ward Freman Community Pool has been a central part of life in Buntingford and nearby villages in East Hertfordshire since the 1970s, providing a place where generations have learned to swim. After the district council closed the pool on health and safety grounds in December 2023, local residents formed the Ward Freman Community Pool Group Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), a registered charity in England and Wales. Through significant fundraising and collaboration, the charity became the owner of the pool in May 2026 and immediately began refurbishment of the pool, plant room, and public facilities. The goal is to reopen in Autumn 2026 as a community-owned and community-run asset, offering high-quality, safe, and inclusive swimming opportunities for all ages. Lifeguards will play a key role in delivering a welcoming, safe environment once the pool reopens.Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Lifeguard role based at Ward Freman Community Pool in Buntingford. The Lifeguard will be responsible for monitoring pool users, ensuring water safety, enforcing pool rules, and responding promptly and effectively to any emergencies. Daily tasks include supervising swimming sessions, performing regular safety checks of the pool and surrounding areas, setting up and maintaining equipment, and supporting safe access for people of all ages and abilities. The role will also involve basic poolside housekeeping, clear communication with swimmers and colleagues, and assisting with lessons, classes, and community events as needed. Lifeguards are expected to model professional conduct, contribute to a positive visitor experience, and support the community-focused values of the pool.Qualifications Strong water safety and swimming skills, with the ability to remain alert and focused during extended periods of pool supervision.Recognized lifeguard certification (e.g., RLSS UK or equivalent), including up-to-date training in CPR, first aid, and rescue techniques.Clear and confident communication skills, with the ability to give calm, firm instructions and provide excellent customer service to people of all ages.Ability to stay composed in emergencies, assess situations quickly, and work effectively with colleagues to implement safety procedures.Good physical fitness and stamina, including the ability to perform rescues and move equipment safely.Strong awareness of health and safety practices, including risk assessment, incident reporting, and safe use of poolside equipment.Collaborative mindset, reliability, and willingness to support a community-led facility, including occasional support for classes or events.Previous experience in a lifeguard, swim instructor, or leisure centre role is beneficial; experience working with children, older adults, or people with disabilities is an advantage.
