Role DescriptionA Marine Engineer is responsible for designing, operating, maintaining, inspecting, troubleshooting, and improving marine propulsion systems, machinery, equipment, and vessel engineering systems. The role supports the safe, reliable, efficient, and environmentally responsible operation of ships, offshore vessels, marine facilities, and related engineering assets.Key responsibilities include operating and maintaining marine propulsion systems, engines, generators, pumps, compressors, boilers, heat exchangers, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, steering systems, and auxiliary machinery; conducting inspections, testing, troubleshooting, repairs, adjustments, and preventive maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment; monitoring machinery performance, fuel consumption, temperatures, pressures, vibration, lubrication, emissions, and other operating parameters; diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and control-system faults using technical documentation and diagnostic equipment; developing and implementing preventive and predictive maintenance programs; planning maintenance activities, equipment overhauls, spare-parts requirements, inspections, and machinery servicing; interpreting engineering drawings, equipment manuals, piping diagrams, technical specifications, and maintenance procedures; maintaining accurate machinery logs, maintenance records, inspection reports, equipment histories, and technical documentation; supporting vessel commissioning, dry-docking, repairs, upgrades, modifications, and machinery installations; coordinating with shipyard teams, classification societies, equipment manufacturers, contractors, suppliers, vessel operators, and other engineering personnel; ensuring marine machinery and systems comply with applicable maritime regulations, class requirements, safety standards, environmental requirements, and company procedures; supporting inspections, surveys, audits, safety checks, and regulatory examinations; monitoring fuel efficiency, energy consumption, emissions, equipment reliability, and operational performance; identifying opportunities for energy optimization, maintenance improvement, automation, and lifecycle-cost reduction; supporting propulsion-system optimization and machinery performance analysis; utilizing computerized maintenance-management systems, condition-monitoring technologies, sensors, data analytics, automation, and predictive-maintenance tools; supporting digital-twin, remote-monitoring, and AI-assisted diagnostics where applicable; managing engineering projects, technical upgrades, equipment replacements, and maintenance initiatives; coordinating emergency repairs and responding to machinery failures and operational incidents; maintaining appropriate spare-parts inventories, technical tools, safety equipment, and engineering resources; supporting environmental initiatives related to fuel efficiency, emissions reduction, waste management, ballast-water systems, and sustainable marine operations; and continuously improving vessel safety, machinery reliability, energy efficiency, operational performance, and engineering standards.QualificationsBachelor's or Master's degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine Technology, or a related discipline.Strong understanding of marine propulsion systems, diesel engines, gas turbines, generators, pumps, compressors, boilers, hydraulic systems, and auxiliary machinery.Strong knowledge of marine mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, control, and automation systems.Ability to interpret engineering drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams, equipment manuals, technical specifications, and maintenance documentation.Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, analytical, and problem-solving skills.Knowledge of preventive, corrective, predictive, and condition-based maintenance practices.Understanding of maritime regulations, classification requirements, vessel safety standards, environmental regulations, and marine engineering procedures.Familiarity with IMO requirements, SOLAS, MARPOL, and relevant classification-society standards is advantageous.Knowledge of classification societies such as ABS, DNV, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, or equivalent organizations is beneficial.Familiarity with computerized maintenance-management systems, condition-monitoring platforms, engineering software, and digital maintenance tools.Knowledge of marine automation, instrumentation, PLC systems, sensors, remote monitoring, and control systems is advantageous.Familiarity with LNG, hybrid propulsion, electric propulsion, alternative fuels, emissions-reduction technologies, and energy-efficiency systems is beneficial.Understanding of predictive maintenance, IoT sensors, marine data analytics, digital twins, and AI-assisted machinery diagnostics is advantageous.Strong documentation, reporting, technical communication, and project-management skills.Ability to coordinate with shipyards, classification societies, contractors, suppliers, vessel crews, and engineering teams.Strong safety awareness and knowledge of risk assessment, emergency procedures, machinery safety, and environmental protection.Relevant marine engineering licenses, certificates of competency, professional engineering registration, or specialized manufacturer certifications are advantageous where applicable.Ability to work effectively in marine, offshore, shipyard, or engineering environments as required.High level of technical discipline, reliability, attention to detail, accountability, and safety awareness.Strong commitment to continuous learning and staying informed about marine technology, automation, alternative fuels, sustainable shipping, digital engineering, and emerging propulsion technologies.
