Medical Officer In Charge - Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department

Job Summary:The In-charge Medical Officer of the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day clinical and administrative operations of the emergency department. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, timely, and efficient emergency medical care to patients, coordinates with multidisciplinary teams, manages staff, and ensures compliance with healthcare protocols and safety standards.Key Responsibilities:1. Clinical Leadership and Patient Care:Supervise and provide expert clinical care to patients in emergency situationsLead and support medical teams in rapid assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of acute medical conditions, trauma, and emergencies.Ensure triage protocols are followed and that critically ill patients are prioritized.Monitor patient outcomes and ensure best practices are being followed.2. Operational Management:Oversee daily operations of the A&E department, ensuring adequate staffing and resource availability.Coordinate duty rosters, shift assignments, and ensure 24/7 emergency coverage.Monitor and maintain emergency equipment, medications, and supplies.3. Staff Supervision and Development:Supervise junior doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other support staff.Identify training needs.Mentor and train medical officers and interns on emergency protocols and procedures.4. Quality Assurance and Compliance:Ensure adherence to hospital policies, national health regulations, and international emergency care standards.Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and audits. Implement infection control protocols and patient safety guidelines.5. Communication and Coordination:Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other departments.Liaise with ambulance services, police, disaster response teams, and referral centers as needed. Coordinate with other hospital departments (radiology, lab, surgery, ICU) for integrated patient care.6. Business Development:Identify opportunities to reach the revenue targets of the department.Develop proposals for new A & E services and capacity expansion.Work with hospital management and marketing teams to promote A & E services.Improve conversion of A & E attendance into admissions where clinically appropriate.Support doctor engagement and consultant availability to strengthen the A & E service offering.Entry RequirementsMBBS or equivalent medical degree.Full registration with the SLMC.Minimum 8 years of clinical experience, preferably with 2 years of significant experience in an Accident & Emergency / critical care setting.Demonstrated experience in emergency patient management, triage, resuscitation and acute care.Current BLS and ACLS certification; ATLS certification would be an added advantage.
