Prospective team members will join a company that values artistic excellence, storytelling, and inclusive, engaging experiences for audiences and performers alike.Role Description The Music Director is a full-time, on-site role based in the Greater Chicago Area. This role is responsible for overseeing all musical aspects of Chicago Tap Theatre’s productions, including selecting, arranging, and directing music that supports choreography and storytelling. Day-to-day tasks include collaborating closely with artistic and production staff, leading rehearsals with musicians, coordinating with tap dancers on musical timing and dynamics, and supervising live and recorded music for performances. The Music Director will also manage music scheduling, maintain music libraries and scores, and ensure high-quality sound in rehearsal and performance environments. Additional responsibilities may include supporting educational programs, mentoring emerging musicians, and participating in community and outreach events.Qualifications Strong foundation in Music Theory and general Music, with the ability to arrange, adapt, and communicate musical ideas for dance-focused performances.Experience in Music Education, including coaching performers, leading rehearsals, and supporting educational or outreach programs.Background in Music Production, such as recording, editing, and coordinating live and recorded music for stage performances.Experience with Church Music or similar ensemble and service-based settings, demonstrating skill in leading musicians and collaborating with artistic teams.Previous experience as a music director, band leader, or ensemble director, preferably in dance, theatre, or performance settings.Proficiency with relevant music software, audio equipment, and playback systems used in rehearsals and performances.Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with dancers, choreographers, and technical staff.Ability to work on-site in the Greater Chicago Area, manage a full-time schedule, and support evening and weekend rehearsals or performances as needed.Bachelor’s degree in Music or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
