This position is responsible for ensuring vessels are maintained to the highest standards of safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.The Port Engineer will work closely with vessel crews, shipyards, contractors, and management to coordinate maintenance activities, manage repair projects, and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.Key ResponsibilitiesOversee the technical operation, maintenance, and repair of assigned vessels to ensure safe and reliable performance.Plan, coordinate, and manage vessel maintenance, dry dockings, equipment overhauls, and repair projects.Work closely with vessel Chief Engineers and Captains to identify maintenance needs, troubleshoot equipment issues, and coordinate repairs.Conduct regular vessel inspections to assess the condition of machinery, equipment, and engineering systems.Develop repair specifications, technical scopes of work, cost estimates, and project schedules.Coordinate with shipyards, contractors, vendors, and service providers to ensure repairs are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.Manage contractor selection, review quotations, negotiate contracts, and monitor project expenditures.Oversee planned maintenance programs, ensuring maintenance activities are completed and properly documented.Coordinate vessel inspections, surveys, and certifications with regulatory agencies, classification societies, and flag state authorities.Develop and monitor maintenance and repair budgets, review purchase orders, and coordinate procurement of spare parts and equipment.Provide technical support during equipment failures, emergency repairs, and operational challenges.Ensure engineering activities comply with applicable safety management systems, environmental regulations, and company procedures.Maintain effective communication with vessel crews, management, and external stakeholders.Qualifications & ExperienceMinimum of 5 years of marine engineering experience, including sea-going experience aboard vessels.Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering or a related field preferred. Significant relevant engineering experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.Marine engineering license or equivalent international certification preferred.Strong knowledge of marine propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, generators, pumps, compressors, boilers, and HVAC systems.Familiarity with marine electrical systems, automation, and controls.Experience with vessel maintenance, dry dockings, shipyard repairs, and machinery overhauls.Knowledge of applicable maritime regulations, including SOLAS, MARPOL, classification society requirements, and flag state regulations.Experience developing repair specifications, managing contractors, and overseeing maintenance budgets.Strong mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic troubleshooting skills.Familiarity with planned maintenance systems and computerized maintenance management software.Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, piping diagrams, and electrical diagrams.Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.Preferred QualificationsPrevious experience as a Chief Engineer or senior marine engineering officer.Experience managing vessel repairs and dry dockings in a shoreside technical management role.Familiarity with NS5 or similar vessel maintenance management systems.Experience coordinating regulatory inspections and classification surveys.Manufacturer-specific training on marine engines and auxiliary equipment.Working ConditionsPosition is based in Yokohama, Japan, with regular attendance aboard assigned vessels.Must be available to work aboard vessels five days per week as required.Work involves both office and shipboard environments, including shipyards and machinery spaces.Must be comfortable climbing ladders, accessing confined machinery spaces, and working around operating marine equipment.Must possess a valid passport and be able to travel as required.Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have a strong sea-going marine engineering background combined with practical experience managing vessel maintenance and repairs. This individual should be technically capable, organized, and comfortable working directly with vessel crews, contractors, and shipyards to keep vessels operating safely and efficiently.Contract Award ContingencyThis position is contingent upon the award of a pending contract.
