About the JobRole DescriptionA Port Pilot is responsible for safely guiding and maneuvering vessels through ports, harbors, channels, waterways, and other restricted or congested areas. The role requires extensive knowledge of local waterways, navigation, vessel handling, port procedures, weather and tidal conditions, and maritime regulations to ensure the safe movement of vessels, passengers, crew, cargo, port infrastructure, and the marine environment.Key ResponsibilitiesSafely pilot and maneuver vessels entering, departing, berthing, unberthing, anchoring, and transiting within designated port and harbor areas.Assess vessel characteristics, size, draft, maneuverability, propulsion systems, and operational limitations before and during pilotage.Review vessel movement plans, port conditions, navigational information, weather forecasts, tides, currents, visibility, and other relevant factors before each assignment.Provide professional navigation and maneuvering advice to the vessel’s master and bridge team.Conduct pilotage operations in accordance with applicable maritime laws, port regulations, navigation standards, and company procedures.Maintain continuous awareness of surrounding vessels, port infrastructure, navigational hazards, restricted areas, traffic conditions, and environmental risks.Use radar, ECDIS, AIS, GPS, VHF radio, electronic navigation systems, and other approved navigational equipment effectively.Communicate clearly and continuously with vessel masters, bridge teams, tugboat operators, port control, terminal personnel, and other relevant parties.Coordinate vessel movements with tugboats, mooring teams, traffic control centers, terminal operators, and port authorities when required.Monitor vessel speed, heading, position, course, under-keel clearance, and maneuvering performance throughout pilotage operations.Provide guidance during berthing, unberthing, turning, docking, anchoring, channel transit, and other complex vessel movements.Take appropriate action in response to changing weather, currents, traffic conditions, equipment failures, restricted visibility, or other navigational hazards.Identify and respond appropriately to emergency situations, including loss of propulsion, steering failure, communication failure, grounding risks, collision risks, or adverse weather.Maintain accurate pilotage records, vessel movement reports, navigation records, incident reports, and other required documentation.Conduct or participate in pre-pilotage assessments and post-operation reviews where required.Report navigational hazards, port infrastructure issues, marine incidents, near misses, and safety concerns promptly.Maintain current knowledge of port layouts, navigation channels, berth characteristics, local regulations, tidal conditions, currents, and navigational restrictions.Inspect and maintain personal pilotage equipment, communication devices, navigation tools, and required safety equipment.Comply with applicable maritime, port, environmental, occupational health and safety, and vessel traffic regulations.Maintain appropriate pilotage licenses, certifications, medical fitness, and other qualifications required by the relevant maritime authority.Support emergency response, vessel recovery, marine safety operations, and other port-related activities when required.Participate in pilotage training, simulator exercises, safety drills, competency assessments, and professional development programs.Assist with reviewing and improving port navigation procedures, pilotage practices, risk assessments, and operational standards.Maintain a high level of professionalism, situational awareness, decision-making, communication, and safety awareness at all times.Perform other pilotage, navigation, vessel movement, and port safety duties as assigned by management.
