Intrepid Geophysics is looking for an experienced and technically strong potential field geophysicist with significant Gravity expertise to join our team. For more than 35 years, Intrepid Geophysics has developed specialist geophysical software used for potential-field data processing, interpretation and modelling around the world. We are looking for someone who already has strong practical experience working with gravity data and can take responsibility for processing projects with limited supervision. This is not an entry-level or graduate training position. However, we are not necessarily looking for someone with decades of experience. We are more interested in finding a technically capable geophysicist with strong fundamentals, good mathematical thinking, exploration insight and enough hands-on processing experience to independently investigate and solve difficult data problems. The roleA key part of this position will be working extensively with our INTREPID 3D geophysical processing software. You will use INTREPID 3D for gravity data processing, quality control, interpretation and advanced problem solving. You will also work closely with our technical and software development teams, providing practical geophysical input into the ongoing development and improvement of the software.A major part of the role will involve taking real-world geophysical datasets from initial inspection through processing and QA/QC to high-quality, defensible final products. You will be expected to understand why a processing step is required rather than simply following an established workflow. You will also contribute to the development of our AI-enabled exploration framework, where we are combining our geophysical tools, data-processing capability and exploration knowledge to create more intelligent exploration workflows. This means we are looking for someone who can think beyond processing and contribute ideas about how geophysical data can be used to generate real exploration value.Responsibilities will include:Processing and QA/QC of ground, airborne and marine gravity datasetsUsing INTREPID 3D as the primary platform for gravity and potential-field processingGravity data reduction and calculation of gravity anomaliesApplication and assessment of appropriate corrections, including drift, tidal, latitude, elevation/free-air, Bouguer and terrain correctionsLevelling and network adjustment of gravity datasetsIdentifying and resolving survey, positioning, elevation, datum and processing problemsGridding, filtering and merging geophysical datasetsAssessing data quality and distinguishing genuine geological signal from acquisition or processing artefactsTroubleshooting unusual or complex datasets where standard processing workflows are insufficientWorking with gravity, magnetic and other potential-field datasets for geological interpretationSupporting 2D/3D gravity and potential-field modelling where requiredDocumenting processing methodology, assumptions, parameters and QA/QC resultsReviewing and improving existing processing workflowsTesting INTREPID 3D processing tools and algorithms using real-world datasetsIdentifying software, workflow or algorithmic issues and working with the development team to investigate solutionsProviding technical feedback that contributes to future improvements in INTREPID 3DContributing ideas to new AI-assisted geophysical and exploration workflowsHelping develop approaches that connect geophysical processing with broader exploration decisions and targetingProviding technical advice to clients and other members of the Intrepid teamSupporting specialist technical training and customer projects when requiredWhat we're looking forEssentialDegree in Geophysics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Earth Sciences or a closely related disciplineStrong practical experience processing gravity dataA solid understanding of the physics and mathematics behind gravity and potential-field methodsAbility to independently take a gravity dataset from raw or field data through processing, QA/QC and final deliverablesStrong understanding of gravity reductions, corrections, levelling, filtering and griddingAbility to diagnose problems in datasets rather than relying only on predetermined processing workflowsStrong numerical and analytical problem-solving skillsGood understanding of coordinate systems, elevations, datums and positioning as they relate to gravity processingAbility to assess whether a processing result is geophysically and geologically reasonableAbility to clearly document and explain technical decisionsConfidence learning and working deeply with specialist geophysical processing softwareStrong exploration thinking and an interest in how geophysical data can contribute to better exploration decisionsAbility to generate, test and develop new ideas rather than simply follow established workflowsWe expect applicants to already have meaningful commercial, government, research or survey-processing experience. Typically this would come from approximately 5+ years of relevant work, but demonstrated technical capability is more important to us than a particular number of years.Previous INTREPID 3D experience is valuable but not essential. We are looking for someone with sufficiently strong gravity-processing fundamentals that they can become productive in the software quickly without requiring extensive training in geophysical concepts.Highly desirableExperience in one or more of the following would be particularly valuable:Airborne gravity or gravity gradiometryMarine gravity processingGround gravity survey processingFull Tensor Gravity / FTG or FALCON dataMagnetic data processing and interpretationPotential-field modelling and interpretationTerrain corrections and high-resolution DEM processingSurvey levelling and network adjustmentCombining gravity information with seismic, geology or other geophysical datasetsMineral or energy exploration workflows and targetingPython, MATLAB or similar numerical/scientific programmingDevelopment or validation of geophysical algorithmsMachine learning, AI-assisted geoscience or data-driven explorationINTREPID 3D or other professional potential-field processing packagesThe person we're looking forTechnical knowledge is important, but equally important is how you approach a problem. You are likely to enjoy this role if you are the person who receives a difficult dataset and wants to understand why it doesn't behave as expected. We are not looking for a push-button processor. We want someone who questions the data, tests assumptions, understands the mathematics and geology behind the result, and thinks about what the data means from an exploration perspective. The right person should be comfortable developing new ideas, testing different approaches and contributing to new technical and exploration workflows rather than simply following an existing process. We are particularly interested in someone who is:mathematically strong and analyticalcurious about unusual data behaviourable to work independentlysystematic with QA/QCcomfortable solving problems that don't have an obvious answerinterested in exploration, interpretation and targetingcreative in developing new technical approacheswilling to investigate the underlying physics rather than treating processing software as a black boxable to communicate complex technical issues clearly to both specialists and non-specialistsinterested in how AI can support better geoscience and exploration decisionskeen to use practical geophysics experience to help improve specialist geophysical software and future exploration workflowsWhy Intrepid? This position offers an opportunity to work much more deeply with geophysical processing than a typical production-processing role. You will work directly with INTREPID 3D, complex international datasets and the people developing the algorithms and processing tools behind the software. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to Intrepid's evolving AI-enabled exploration framework, helping connect advanced geophysical processing with new ideas in interpretation, targeting and exploration decision-making.Your work will contribute both to solving real geophysical problems and to improving the technology and exploration workflows used by geoscientists internationally. If you are a hands-on geophysicist who enjoys mathematics, data, exploration thinking and solving difficult gravity-processing problems, we would like to hear from you.
