Position OverviewWe are looking for a Product Design Engineer to join our international product development team in Thailand. This role will work closely with our North American Senior Product Designer and manufacturing teams to develop, refine, prototype and launch new products. The position is designed to create a highly integrated global development process, leveraging the time-zone difference between North America and Thailand to accelerate product development and improve responsiveness. The successful candidate will combine strong mechanical design and CAD skills with a practical understanding of manufacturing. They will not simply execute drawings—they will be expected to understand the function, intent, cost and manufacturability of the products they are developing. The ideal candidate is curious, technically strong, hands-on and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where designs are continuously tested, challenged and improved.Key ResponsibilitiesProduct Design & EngineeringWork closely with the North American Senior Product Designer to develop new products from concept through production.Translate design concepts and requirements into detailed 3D CAD models and production-ready drawings.Develop and maintain product designs, assemblies, components and engineering documentation.Support the development of sheet-metal, tubular, fabricated, extruded and other manufactured products.Apply sound mechanical engineering and design principles to ensure products are functional, durable and manufacturable.Identify opportunities to simplify designs, reduce cost, improve quality and improve ease of assembly.Participate in design reviews and provide technical recommendations and alternatives.Develop prototypes and incorporate learnings from testing into subsequent design iterations.Manufacturing & DFMWork directly with manufacturing and production teams in Thailand to ensure designs can be produced efficiently and consistently.Apply Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly principles throughout the development process.Identify manufacturing risks before products reach production.Work with suppliers and manufacturing engineers to resolve design and production issues.Participate in prototype builds and production trials.Recommend changes to materials, processes, tolerances, welds, fasteners and construction methods where appropriate.Engineering DocumentationCreate detailed manufacturing drawings with appropriate dimensions, tolerances, materials and specifications.Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs).Maintain accurate CAD models and engineering documentation.Implement engineering changes and maintain revision control.Ensure released documentation accurately represents the intended production product.Global Team CollaborationWork closely with North American design and product development personnel.Provide progress updates and communicate technical issues clearly across time zones.Prepare completed work for review by the North American design team so that development can continue efficiently across working hours.Ask questions and identify gaps in requirements before proceeding with significant design work.Develop a strong understanding of the company’s products, customers, applications and design standards.Ownership & Problem SolvingThis position is expected to be an engineering partner, not simply a CAD execution role. The successful candidate will be expected to:Understand the reason behind a design rather than simply following instructions.Identify potential design, manufacturing, quality or cost issues.Challenge a proposed solution when they believe there is a better approach.Investigate problems and identify root causes.Recommend practical solutions and work with the appropriate teams to implement them.Take ownership of assigned projects and deliverables.Follow issues through from identification to resolution.Qualifications & ExperienceDegree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Product Design or a related discipline.Approximately 3–7 years of experience in mechanical/product design, preferably in a manufacturing environment.Strong experience with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Inventor or equivalent.Experience designing products for manufacturing.Strong understanding of sheet-metal and/or fabricated products is highly desirable.Experience with welding, tube fabrication, machining, extrusion, fasteners and assembly methods is an asset.Ability to read and create detailed engineering drawings.Understanding of tolerances and GD&T.Experience working with manufacturing or suppliers is strongly preferred.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Strong written and spoken English.Personal CharacteristicsWe are looking for someone who is:Curious – wants to understand how and why things work.Practical – designs products that can actually be manufactured.Proactive – identifies problems rather than waiting for someone else to find them.Detail-oriented – understands that small design details can have significant production consequences.Collaborative – works effectively with designers, engineers, manufacturing, suppliers and quality teams.Accountable – takes ownership of commitments and follows projects through to completion.Continuous-improvement minded – constantly looks for ways to make products, processes and designs better. What Success Looks LikeSuccess in this role will mean becoming a trusted extension of the North American product development team and an important link between design and manufacturing.Over time, the successful candidate should be capable of taking increasing ownership of product development activities, moving from executing detailed designs to independently solving engineering problems and eventually leading portions of product development projects.Interested?
