Our Major Projects group is currently looking to add a Project Accountant to our growing team, based in Edmonton, AB.Reporting to the Project Controller, this role is a key contributor to the financial success of major construction projects, providing full life-cycle accounting functions and operational cost control for assigned projects. Working in close partnership with Project Managers and field operations, this position is responsible for the accurate tracking, analysis, and reporting of project costs from job setup through to closeout, and plays a critical role in maintaining budget integrity, supporting client billing, and ensuring compliance with Valard's financial controls and reporting standards.Duties And ResponsibilitiesProject Setup & Budget ManagementSet up new projects in JD Edwards (Job Master, Cost Codes, budgets) and maintain job master data integrity with Quanta's consolidation toolParticipate in Day One Budget creation from tender documentation and support the budget change management process, including tracking revisionsCost Control & Financial ReportingReview and correct cost coding on purchase orders and other transactions, and support field staff with third-party cost codingManage monthly cost accruals, journal entries, and mid-month report packages with project management teamsFor Percentage of Completion projects, facilitate monthly forecast meetings, provide variance analysis summaries, and load approved revenue/estimate data into JD EdwardsPrepare margin analysis and WIP calculations (costs/billings in excess), and support project profitability analysis and forecastingTrack pending, approved, and disputed change orders, quantifying revenue/margin impact per policyClient Billing & Accounts ReceivablePrepare and administer client billings with required backup documentation, and monitor accounts receivable for collectionsReconcile total contract value to billings and forecast, and manage CIEB positions within established thresholdsTrack and reconcile holdback receivable and administer release collection; ensure proper GST/PST treatment on billingsSubcontracts, Audits & CloseoutAdminister subcontractor contracts and facilitate mid-month PO review meetings; compile documentation for internal/external auditsSupport the Project Controller in closing and reviewing project costs on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basisManage job closeout, including reconciliation, final cost reporting, and holdback payable tracking/releaseEnsure revenue is recognized per ASC 606 with supporting documentation, and proper GST/PST treatment on invoicesMonth End & GeneralFacilitate month end cost accrual meetings and ensure deadlines/reporting requirements are metVerify labour, equipment, and material charges, and reconcile intercompany/shared-service allocationsCollaborate on Estimate-to-Complete calculations; complete ad hoc analyses and other duties as assignedRequirementsPost-Secondary education in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field3+ years of progressive experience in a project accounting or cost control rolean equivalent combination of education and experience will be consideredSolid understanding of construction revenue recognition principles, cost and revenue accruals, and percentage of completion accountingWorking towards or holding an accounting designation (CPA or equivalent)Preferred Skills / QualificationsAdvanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial modellingExperience with job costing management, project analytics, and Work-in-Progress (WIP) reportingFamiliarity with Quanta Services consolidation tools and financial reporting processesPrior experience in the transmission, distribution, or renewable energy construction sectorCost control or project controls backgroundPrior experience in the construction, electrical, or utility industryJD Edwards or SAP experienceBenefitsWe offer a comprehensive and competitive total rewards package that incorporates a complete range of employee benefits, including a 5% RRSP matching program, to ensure you have the tools necessary to manage, maintain, and improve your health and wellbeing.About Our BusinessValard Construction is Canada's premier utility contractor providing comprehensive EPC+ (engineering, procurement, construction) and maintenance services to utilities, independent power producers, mining, oil and gas industries and rural electric associations.
