RiboForge | Los Angeles, California | On-Site | Full-TimeAbout RiboForgeRiboForge is a stealth biotechnology company based in Los Angeles. We are building a team with deep expertise in structural biology and X-ray crystallography and are seeking motivated researchers to support our experimental work.About the RoleWe are seeking a Research Assistant whose primary focus will be hands-on crystal harvesting and preparation of samples for X-ray diffraction studies. Most of your bench work will center on identifying and fishing crystals under a microscope, mounting them in loops, performing cryoprotection and flash-freezing, and maintaining organized cryogenic sample storage. Your work will directly support the quality and throughput of RiboForge’s crystallographic screening efforts. This role is well suited to someone who enjoys precise microscope work, handles delicate samples carefully, and maintains consistency across repeated harvesting sessions. You will work closely with our scientists to improve harvesting workflows and prepare crystals for diffraction experiments.Key ResponsibilitiesHarvest crystals: Identify, select, and fish protein or nucleic acid crystals from crystallization drops under a microscope using appropriate loops and mounting tools.Prepare crystals for diffraction: Carry out cryoprotection, mounting, flash-freezing, and cryogenic storage according to established protocols.Maintain sample traceability: Accurately label and track harvested crystals, recording crystallization conditions, sample identities, storage locations, and handling observations.Improve harvesting consistency: Work with scientists to troubleshoot crystal damage, sample loss, and variability during harvesting and freezing.Support crystallization experiments: Set up crystallization screens, monitor crystal growth, and assist with optimization of conditions.Prepare reagents and samples: Make buffers, stock solutions, and cryoprotectants using accurate micropipetting and appropriate sample-handling techniques.Document and communicate results: Maintain complete experimental records and coordinate sample preparation with the team’s diffraction schedules.Required QualificationsHands-on experience harvesting protein or nucleic acid crystals for X-ray crystallography, including fishing crystals under a microscope, mounting, and freezing.Careful technique when manipulating small, fragile crystals and working with small sample volumes.Patience and sustained attention to detail during repeated microscope-based tasks.Basic wet lab proficiency, including micropipetting and preparation of buffers, stock solutions, and dilutions.Strong organizational skills and a consistent approach to sample labeling, tracking, and experimental documentation.Clear communication and the ability to follow protocols, recognize problems, and work collaboratively to resolve them.Preferred QualificationsExperience handling protein or nucleic acid crystals and using appropriate techniques to preserve sample integrity.Familiarity with crystallization screening, optimization, and cryoprotectant selection.Experience preparing cryogenic sample inventories or organizing samples for synchrotron diffraction experiments.A bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, chemistry, or a related field is a plus, but is not required.Experience harvesting protein crystals is relevant and welcome; prior RNA crystallography experience is a plus.Compensation and BenefitsAnticipated full-time compensation is $70,000 per year, with flexibility to increase based on experience and qualifications. Part-time compensation and benefits eligibility will be discussed based on the position and schedule. Health coverage and benefits are included for full-time positions. Relocation assistance may be considered based on the candidate’s qualifications and circumstances. How to ApplySubmit your resume, cover letter, and references to careers@riboforge.com with the subject line “Research Assistant – X-ray Crystallography & Crystal Harvesting.”In your application email, include two to three sentences describing your hands-on experience with crystal harvesting, including the types of crystals you have worked with and your experience fishing, mounting, and freezing them. Please also indicate whether you are interested in a part-time position, full-time position, or either, along with your availability.
