Apply & track with Apply EdgeGENERAL DESCRIPTIONThe Drill Rig Operator is responsible for operating, maintaining, and managing drilling rigs and associated equipment, to install boreholes, or perform geotechnical, exploration drilling. This role involves ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality drilling operations in accordance with project specifications, safety regulations, and environmental standards.Key responsibilities:1. Rig Operation and Drilling• Operate and control various types of drilling rigs (e.g., rotary, percussion, auger, diamond core, sonic, or directional rigs) to bore holes to required depths and specifications.• Operate Klemm (e.g., KR 702, KR 806, or similar) and Kubota drill rigs to complete drilling, sampling, and installation tasks as per project specifications.• Monitor drilling parameters such as penetration rate, torque, and pressure to ensure optimal performance.• Set up, position, and secure the rig and all related equipment before drilling operations begin.• Adjust drilling techniques and tooling to suit varying ground conditions and project requirements.• Install and retrieve casing, drill rods, and core barrels as required.2. Equipment Maintenance and Safety• Conduct daily pre-start checks, inspections, and routine maintenance on drill rigs, compressors, pumps, and support vehicles.• Diagnose and report equipment faults, breakdowns, or safety concerns promptly.• Maintain a clean and organized work area around the rig at all times.• Adhere strictly to site safety procedures, including lock-out/tag-out and confined-space entry protocols.• Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and hazard assessments.3. Sampling and Data Collection• Collect core, soil, or rock samples in accordance with technical and quality standards.• Record drilling logs, depths, lithology, and water strikes with precision and completeness.4. Site Preparation and Support• Assist with rig mobilization, demobilization, and transportation to and from project sites.• Operate auxiliary machinery such as forklifts, water trucks, or excavators when required.• Manage drill cuttings and fluids in compliance with environmental and waste management procedures.5. Teamwork and Communication• Work collaboratively with drillers’ assistants, offsiders, mechanics, and field supervisors.• Communicate effectively with site managers, clients, and safety officers regarding progress, challenges, and site conditions.• Train and mentor junior staff in drilling operations and safety procedures.Qualifications and Experience:• High school diploma or equivalent (technical or trade certification preferred).• Minimum 2–5 years of drilling experience, depending on project type (geotechnical, mineral exploration, or water well drilling).• Valid Drill Rig Operator’s License or certification (where applicable).• Knowledge of drilling fluids, downhole tools, and rig hydraulics.• Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.• Current First Aid/CPR and or equivalent safety certifications.• Valid driver’s license (heavy vehicle endorsement preferred).• Knowledge of ground conditions, drilling methods, and sampling standards (BS 5930, ASTM, AS 1726, etc.).• Strong mechanical and technical skills.• High attention to detail and accuracy in data logging.• Ability to work long hours and in remote or challenging environments.• Commitment to safety, teamwork, and professional conduct.• Good physical fitness and stamina.• Problem-solving mindset and adaptability to changing ground conditions.Key Skill and Attributes• Strong understanding of Klemm and Kubota rig controls and hydraulics.• Mechanically minded with ability to perform minor repairs and diagnostics.• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.• High attention to detail and record keeping.• Strong safety awareness and hazard recognition.• Physically fit, reliable, and willing to work in remote or challenging environments.• Self-motivated with a proactive attitude toward continuous improvement.
