Working within the Safety and Suitability Branch (SSEB), the successful candidate will play a vital role in national security and maritime safety by conducting comprehensive background and suitability screenings on merchant mariner applicants.Mission: To protect the Marine Transportation System (MTS) by ensuring that all merchant mariner applicants meet rigorous safety, security, and suitability standards before being issued credentials.Clearance Level Required: Ability to obtain and maintain a favorable security screening/USCG Suitability (requires access to unclassified but Security Sensitive Information). JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Evaluate merchant mariner applications to determine if applicants meet the required safety and suitability standards to perform the duties associated with the credentials they are seeking. Obtain, review, and analyze necessary personal data, including narcotics question forms, driver’s license histories (National Driver Register), FBI criminal histories, and proof of citizenship or nationality. Investigate and reconcile any conflicting documentation found within applicant records. Maintain a high-volume production rate, completing a minimum of 21 units of work per day, which equates to 105 to 120 units per week. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to review complex personal histories, legal records, and background check data to make suitability determinations.Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy when handling sensitive Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Security Sensitive Information.Ability to investigate discrepancies and reconcile conflicting information logically and efficiently.Strong time-management skills to consistently meet daily and weekly production quotas in a fast-paced environment.Familiarity with interpreting background checks, criminal histories, or driving records is highly preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
