Our headquarters are in Delft, The Netherlands and we have two satellite offices in Oslo, Norway and Rome, Italy with a total of 125 experts employed at S[&]T.We are looking for a versatile Scientific Software Engineer to develop innovative software tools for complex high-tech engineering environments.In this role, you will work at the intersection of software engineering, applied research and systems engineering. You will translate research results, engineering methodologies and technical concepts into practical software solutions that can be used by engineers throughout the product development lifecycle.The applications you develop may support activities ranging from system architecture and early-stage design analysis to verification, diagnostics and operational data analysis.A significant part of the role involves exploring new technologies, rapidly developing demonstrators and prototypes, and subsequently turning successful concepts into robust and scalable software solutions.You will work closely with software engineers, researchers, systems specialists and technical stakeholders from different high-tech domains. Because projects and technical challenges vary, the role requires someone who enjoys learning new technologies, understanding complex engineering problems, and determining the most appropriate technical solution rather than working within one fixed technology stack.Responsibilities: Design and develop software tools that integrate with existing engineering environments and development workflows.Translate engineering methodologies and research concepts into practical and scalable software solutions.Develop demonstrators and prototypes from concept through implementation.Analyse technical requirements and determine appropriate technologies, architectures and implementation approaches.Develop software supporting different stages of complex product development, including architecture, design, analysis, verification and diagnostics.Work with Java, C++, Python and other technologies depending on the needs of the project.Apply professional software engineering standards, including clean-code principles, testing, maintainability and effective management of technical debt.Identify opportunities for technical improvement and contribute to software-development and technology roadmaps.Collaborate with researchers, software engineers and technical stakeholders to understand problems and develop suitable solutions.Evaluate and continuously improve existing tools, methodologies and software architectures.Explore new technologies and assess their potential application within high-tech engineering environments.Requirements:Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a comparable technical discipline.Professional experience in scientific programming and/or software engineering.Strong software-development skills and experience developing production-quality software.Professional experience with Java, C++ and Python.Experience developing prototypes or demonstrators and taking concepts from initial idea through implementation.Strong understanding of software-development lifecycles, coding standards, testing and software-engineering best practices.Ability to understand complex technical or research concepts and translate them into practical software implementations.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Comfortable working with different technologies and selecting suitable tools depending on the technical problem.Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary technical teams.Strong communication skills when working with technical specialists and stakeholders.Experience with the following would be considered an advantage:Domain-Specific Language technologies such as Xtext, Xtend, Lark or Langium.Modelling techniques and formalisms such as state machines or Petri nets.Logic-based and formal-method technologies such as Z3, OCL or Prolog.Web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, TypeScript or React.Developing technical improvement roadmaps or addressing technical debt within larger software products.High-tech or complex systems development environments.Applying academic or industrial research results within production software.Interested?
