Reports to: COOLocation: Remote within the UK, with occasional travel to London for match days and team meet-upsAbout Baller LeagueSmall-sided football is the world's biggest game. Baller League is here to define it.Founded in 2024, Baller League was built by football fanatics who saw an opportunity to create something different: a new pathway for talent, a new stage for the game, and a new home for football culture. Our professional 6v6 leagues unite elite players, creators and fans in a football ecosystem that turns every matchday into a cultural moment. We're not following the playbook. We're writing it. We are building a movement that makes football more accessible, more engaging and more connected than ever before- democratising and defining a new era for the world's game. The Baller League app is where fans follow every match, build fantasy squads, chase the league table, watch the best moments and buy tickets and kit. Our iOS app is live and built on a modern SwiftUI stack. Now we want to bring the same experience to millions of fans on Android - and we need someone to build it from the ground up.About the Role You will be our first Android engineer, responsible for taking the Baller League app from zero to the Play Store and beyond. You will own the architecture, the codebase, the CI pipeline and the release process, working closely with our iOS engineer, backend team, designers and product lead to reach feature parity with iOS quickly and then move faster together. This is a hands-on, high-autonomy role. You will make the technical decisions, write most of the code in the first year, and set the standards that future Android hires will follow. What you will doBuild the Android app from scratch using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, mirroring the feature set of our iOS app: Home, Matches (fixtures, live scores, results), Fantasy (squad composition, points, leaderboards), Reels, Rules, Search, Buy (tickets and merchandise) and Settings.Design a clean, testable architecture (MVVM with a repository/interactor layer, unidirectional data flow, clear module boundaries) that echoes the structure of our iOS codebase so the two teams can share domain thinking, naming and API contracts.Integrate our OpenAPI specification to generate a type-safe API client, and work with backend to evolve the contract.Establish a reusable design-system module (theming, typography, colours, controls, loading/shimmer states) that keeps screens consistent and lets us ship new features quickly.Own the platform plumbing: authentication and social sign-in, push notifications, deep links, remote config, analytics, crash reporting and in-app purchases.Integrate our in-house native libraries via JNI, owning its Gradle/ABI packaging, lifecycle and threading on the Kotlin side, and partnering with the library owner on cross-boundary issues.Set up CI/CD with automated builds, tests, lint and Play Store deployment, and run our internal-testing and staged-rollout process.Keep the app performing well on the full range of Android devices our fans use: startup time, jank-free lists, adaptive layouts for phones, foldables and tablets, and a small download size.Collaborate with the iOS engineer on shared problems. Our target Android stackWe prefer the latest stable tooling and are not carrying legacy code, so you will get to use the modern stack end to end:Language: Kotlin 2.x with K2 compiler, Coroutines and FlowUI: Jetpack Compose with Material 3 (including Material 3 Expressive), Compose Navigation 3, adaptive layouts, predictive back, edge-to-edgeArchitecture: MVVM + Repository/Interactor, unidirectional data flow, Hilt (KSP) for dependency injection, multi-module Gradle project with version catalogs and Kotlin DSLPlatform: Android 17 (API 37) target, minSdk 26+Data: OpenAPI-generated client, Ktor or Retrofit + kotlinx.serialization, Room for local persistence, DataStore for preferencesServices: Firebase (Auth, Cloud Messaging, Crashlytics, Analytics, Remote Config, App Check), Credential Manager and Google Sign-In, Google Play Billing, Media3/ExoPlayer, Coil 3Quality: JUnit 5, Turbine, MockK, Compose UI tests, screenshot tests, Baseline Profiles and MacrobenchmarkDelivery: GitHub Actions, Gradle Managed Devices, Play Console with staged rolloutsWhat we are looking for5+ years of professional Android development with at least 2 years shipping production apps built primarily in Jetpack Compose.Deep Kotlin expertise, including coroutines, structured concurrency and Flow.A track record of owning an app end to end: architecture, modularisation, testing, CI/CD and Play Store releases.Strong opinions, loosely held, on app architecture and state management, and the ability to explain them clearly to engineers on other platforms.Experience integrating REST APIs (ideally from OpenAPI specs), authentication flows, push notifications, deep links and analytics.A performance mindset: you profile before you optimise and you know how Compose recomposition, lists and images behave on mid-range devices.Comfortable working remotely and autonomously in a small, fast-moving team, communicating openly in writing and in calls.Right to work in the UK.Nice to haveExperience building a consumer app from zero to launch, or being the first mobile engineer on a platform.Comfortable consuming native libraries via JNI in Java/Kotlin, including Gradle setup, ABI packaging and native lib loading.Google Play Billing, in-app purchases or ticketing integrations.Media and video playback (Media3/ExoPlayer, YouTube Player), live-updating content or real-time scores.Familiarity with SwiftUI or an interest in how the iOS app is built.Wear OS, Android TV or widget development.A love of football and an interest in sport, fantasy or fan-engagement products.Baller Values /How We WorkFootball Obsessed.
