Our client is one of the world's leading sports technology platforms and currently scaling their Backend/ Data Engineering team (basically the engine room of the company and the backend team keeping all of their products running!) They are building the kind of product that quietly sits underneath the sport you love, turning raw video and data into the moments that matter for coaches, athletes and fans everywhere. They're not building a niche tool. They're building infrastructure that every product line in the business depends on, at a scale most engineers never get to work at.This is your chance to join the small, senior engineering team responsible for the data engine that powers all of it. Designing the APIs, distributed systems and large-scale pipelines that connect player identities, game metadata and context across an entire global product suite. What you'll actually be doingThis is a deeply backend-focused role with real ownership from day one. You'll be:Designing and evolving the APIs and distributed systems that underpin a platform processing data at genuinely large scaleTackling hard, unglamorous, genuinely interesting engineering problems (entity resolution, data consistency, scalability, platform architecture)Shaping the technical direction Raising the bar around you through mentoring, design reviews and architectural proposals, not just writing codeWorking alongside a small (soon to be growing) team of engineers who care about doing this properly, not just quicklyIf distributed systems and data at scale are what get you out of bed, this could be a great match for you.Why this one's worth a lookImpact you can actually point to. This isn't a feature team shipping incremental UI updates.. it's core infrastructure that every other product team in the business builds on top of.Genuine investment in the space. The business is opening multiple additional headcount across this engineering area in the coming months (this is a team being actively grown, not backfilled)A real seat at the table. Small teams, senior engineers, and a culture that trusts you to own your work and try new ideas rather than sign off every decision through committee.A standout track record on inclusion. This part of the business has one of the highest concentrations of women in engineering anywhere in the company, and leadership is actively protecting and building on that.Flexibility that's actually flexible. A hybrid working model built around collaboration plus flexible vacation on top of statutory leave, company-wide holidays and dedicated meeting-free days.A workplace people genuinely rate. This company has been voted one of the world's most loved workplaces by its own employees What you'll bringStrong experience in a backend-heavy or data-heavy environment *** This is the single most important thing we're looking for. Domain doesn't matter (FinTech, health tech, data platforms, search infrastructure all translate well), but the technical environment does ***Worked with C#/.NET, GraphQL, Elastic, MongoDB, Kubernetes, or professional experience with video/media at scale. A JVM/Java background is also very welcome.Solid cloud experience (AWS preferred), ideally alongside TDD and CI/CD as standard practiceGenuine technical depth. You've owned hard problems around scalability, data consistency, distributed systems or large-scale data, not just used the toolsA track record of mentoring and technical leadership — code reviews, design reviews, architectural proposals, guiding other engineersThe details
