You’ll lead the engineering function, with development, DevOps and QA reporting to you, building a platform where getting the details right has real consequences for clients’ people getting paid correctly and on time.This is a hands-on leadership role. You set technical direction, own delivery of what the team commits to, and stay close to the work, reviewing code and making the architecture calls yourself.You’ll partner closely with our Product team, who own requirements and roadmap, while you own technical approach, build quality and delivery.What You’ll DoSet technical architecture and a sequenced engineering roadmap from platform priorities, and make the build, buy and integration callsOwn delivery of committed scope across the team, allocating capacity and balancing scope, time and qualityOwn cloud infrastructure and platform reliability: AWS architecture and cost, database performance, deployment pipelines, and incident responseOwn security and data protection: access control, vulnerability management, and the standards that keep client payroll and personal data safe across every market we serveSet the direction on AI, both in the product and in how the team builds, and take it from proof of concept through to productionDefine engineering standards: code and architecture quality, review gates, and how technical debt is managedLead and grow the engineering, DevOps and QA teams, from hiring and onboarding through capability and performanceAct as the final technical decision-maker, and shape how engineering is structured as the team growsWhat You’ll BringProven engineering leadership, accountable for delivery outcomes across multiple teams or product linesA track record of structuring, staffing and maintaining a high-performing engineering team, resourced appropriately and cost-effectivelyExpert hiring manager skills, and a clear people management philosophy for both engineers and technical leadsThe ability to coordinate complex technical projects that span multiple teams, and to report progress in clear, business-friendly termsExpertise in agile delivery, with a focus on team velocity and execution against business goalsA strong working partnership with product management, and excellent communication skills across technical and non-technical audiencesExperience managing relationships with external technology vendors and partnersSuccess leading a distributed team, and demonstrated longevity in at least one recent roleTechnical DepthHands-on credibility. You have written or reviewed production code within the last year, and you intend to keep doing soArchitecture and roadmap. The ability to develop long-term technical roadmaps and broker architectural decisions across teams, drawing on both a deep understanding of established systems and a view on where the industry is headingCloud infrastructure and the data layer. Solid depth across AWS, databases and query performance, deployment pipelines and observability, enough to direct specialists and to weigh cost, reliability and speed against one anotherSecurity. A thorough understanding of security practice across the entire software lifecycle, from product security through to threat managementTechnical debt and system health. Experience prioritising technical debt at an organisational level, identifying risks and balancing short-term delivery against long-term system healthAI.
