Then someone changed how they actually worked โ and made them look like nothing else. Garden tools are still waiting for that. Want to be the one who does it?You'd own every product we make โ how it looks, how it feels in the hand, how it's used, what people see when they open the box. Design decisions are yours, and what you set becomes the design language this brand is known for.๐ฑ Who We AreGardeners Crate is an Australian DTC brand on a mission: to give people their independence back in the garden. Our customers are mostly older, many with arthritis, weaker grip, or a back that doesn't bend the way it used to. We build cordless garden power tools that let them look after their own garden again, by making the tools genuinely more intuitive, more ergonomic and easier to use. Not lighter versions of the same thing. For our customers, that independence means everything. They're not just buyers, they're a community who got their confidence back, their garden back, and in many cases a piece of themselves back. We move fast, we care deeply, and we're building something worth being part of.๐ง How We ThinkEverything comes back to the customer. How heavy it is, where the grip sits, how much force it takes, how many steps to get it out of the box โ every one of those is a decision about the person holding the tool before it's a decision about designAnd we look outside the category for the answer. The best ideas rarely come from other garden tools. They come from noticing how a problem got solved somewhere else entirely, and asking why nobody has brought it here.โก Why This Role ExistsWe're growing fast and adding products โ cordless power tools, garden equipment, and the accessories that go with them. All of it needs one person who designs it in a way the category hasn't seen before. What you set becomes the standard, and the design function grows around you as we do.๐ ๏ธ What Youโll OwnEvery product we make โ cordless power tools, garden equipment and accessories โ from the first question to what the customer sees when they open the box. Usually two or three running at different stages. The deep research. Alongside the founders and engineer, dig deep into the problem: what people are trying to do, what stops them physically, and what's already out there. You'd own the human half and write it up with the engineer.New product development, end to end. You stay with it through engineering, tooling, samples and launch.Concepts and form. This is where we differentiate โ and we mean the mechanism as much as the look. Something that solves the problem a way nobody else has, and looks like nothing else on the shelf.Ergonomics, interaction and safety. Grip, balance, reach, operating force. What's obvious without instructions, how it assembles, what a customer can replace themselves, and how the form keeps them safe.Design for manufacture. Draft, undercuts, wall thickness, part count โ designing for injection moulding from the first sketch. Sometimes you'd work with our manufacturer's engineering team directly.Designing inside the constraints. Weight and force limits from the engineer. And working with our compliance partners, so guards, clearances and safety requirements are built into the form before the mould locks them in.CMF and the brand. Colour, material, finish, and a visual language so the range reads as one family. On sourced products, that's often the whole job.CAD, renders and prototypes. Manufacturable surfaces. Renders for us to decide on and for marketing before stock lands. Then testing the prototypes โ you, the engineer and the founders together, in real hands, changing the design before tooling is cut.Packaging and launch. How it sits in the box, what's revealed first, and how the product packs for freight. Brief the graphic designer and lay out the manuals.Improving what's already out there. Work with our operations manager and engineer on what's coming back and why โ the usability side, what people struggled with or couldn't manage. Some of it is a quick fix, some waits for the next tooling round. You'd decide what's worth changing and when.๐ค What Youโll BringA degree in Industrial Design, Product Design or a related discipline. Design engineers are welcome, as long as you can work with aesthetics and visual design language, not just mechanisms. We're after someone in the middle: practical enough that what you design can be made, visual enough that people stop and look at it.A portfolio of innovative products โ the first thing we'll look at, and the most important. Products you've designed that got made. How many have you physically held? That number matters more to us than years.A track record of reframing problems, not styling solutionsComplex consumer products at volume โ mechanisms, moving parts, power, across different product typesEnd-to-end new product development, from customer problem to production, on more than one product at a timeDesign for injection moulding โ draft, undercuts, wall thickness, part countDeep research experience โ user research you've run and acted onErgonomics and human factors โ grip, force, reach, balanceSolidWorks, Creo or Rhino. Keyshot, Blender or similar. Adobe Creative Suite5+ years experience Comfortable without a design team around you, Australia-basedFew people will tick every box. If the portfolio is strong and you've done most of this, we want to hear from you.๐ What We OfferComplete ownership of design from day one. You make the calls, and what you set becomes the standard.A category to rebuild, not a brief to fill. An underserved customer, a category that stopped thinking, and permission to do something genuinely different.Work that ships. Tooled, manufactured and in people's hands within months. Work directly with the founders, who've already built and scaled an ecommerce brand to over 100,000 customers and are now pouring that into this one. No layers, no bureaucracy. Plus access to mentors who've built brands doing hundreds of millions in revenue.Customers you can actually talk to. Hundreds who've put their hand up to tell you what's wrong with what they own now, and what they actually want.Fully remote, anywhere in Australia, with the design function growing around you as the range expands. And work that actually means something. Every product you get right is someone who can look after their own place again, on their own terms, instead of waiting for help or giving it up altogether.๐ฉ How To ApplySend us three things: your portfolio, your resume, and answers to the two questions below along with your cover letter.1. Your portfolioThe most important part of your application. Products that shipped, and what you decided and why โ not just the final renders.2. Answer these two questionsShow us a product where you reframed the problem. What was the category assuming, what did you question, and how did that change the design?Tell us about designing around a physical limitation โ age, strength, grip, reach, mobility. What did you learn about the person, and what did you change because of it?3. A short cover letterWrite as long as you need. We'd like to know:Why this role, and why this business specificallyWhat excites you about what we're buildingWhy you think you're the right person for itAnd honestly โ what would make you walk away after six months?
