Our rigorous discovery and inquiry-based approach helps to forge new and disruptivebreakthroughs in advanced materials, autonomous robotics, cryptography, cyber security, directedenergy, quantum computing, and secure systems.Job DescriptionThe Directed Energy Research Center (DERC) at the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) is lookingfor a Senior Laser–Matter Interaction Researcher who will conduct laboratory- and field-based applied laser–matter interaction (LMI) research and development activities for different laser-basedapplications. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the LMI Team Leader and be responsible for performing research and development activities on laser-matter interactions and applications .Moreover, the candidate will contribute to the design, development, integration, and operation of advanced laser systems and experimental platforms supporting indoor and outdoor activities. The position may require occasional short-term international travel to meet project and organizational requirements.Responsibilities:The main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:• Independently design, plan, and execute laser-matter interaction activities in both continuous-wave (CW) and pulsed regimes.• Design, integrate, and build experimental setups using various laser sources and detectionsystems for LMI research and development activities.• Design and develop mobile pulsed-laser platforms, including containerized systemsincorporating high-energy lasers operating in different regimes.• Maintain, troubleshoot, characterize, and repair laser systems, including ultrafast andnanosecond laser sources.• Conduct experiments in both indoor and outdoor environments, as required by projects’objectives.• Develop, organize, and maintain LMI laboratory infrastructure and facilities, and providetechnical support to team members across multiple projects.• Develop laser remote sensing systems for both indoor and outdoor trials.• Process and report experimental results through technical documentation and project reports.• Work collaboratively with project teams and departmental stakeholders.• Interact with scientific collaborators, suppliers, and equipment manufacturers.• Participate in multidisciplinary technical projects.• Mentor junior researchers, engineers, and students engaged in laser-matter interactionresearch and development activities.• Perform other duties related to the position, as required.Requirements• Strong hands-on experience with high-power laser systems, optics, and detectors.• Extensive practical experience with laser systems operating across multiple pulse regimes.• Demonstrated experience in operation, maintenance, alignment, and troubleshooting of high-energy pulsed laser systems.• Strong expertise in spectrometry, thermography, calorimetry, and thermal analysis, includinginstrument operation, experimental design, and data interpretation in scientific and industrialcontexts.• Proven experience in ultrafast laser spectroscopy including pump-probe measurements, laser-based spectroscopy and sensing, such as LIBS, LIF, Raman, etc.• Extensive experience in developing complex experimental setups, including optical systemdesign, signal processing, and instrumentation, for controlled LMI experiments.• Familiarity with opto-mechanical design, vibration isolation, and laser beam-stabilityoptimization.• Proficiency in modeling, simulation, and programming tools such as LabVIEW, Python,SOLIDWORKS, and Zemax to support experimental design and data analysis.• Proven ability to work effectively within a multicultural research and development environment,with strong written and verbal communication skills.• Extensive experience in instrument automation, programming, and hardware/softwareinterfacing.• Hands-on experience with high-vacuum systems, including operation, maintenance,troubleshooting, and gas-handling equipment.• Experience with spectroscopy- and imaging-based detection systems.• Ability to work in ISO 7 cleanroom environments while strictly adhering to laser safetyregulations.QualificationsTo be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:• A PhD degree in Laser Technology, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or aclosely related field, with a focus on laser–matter interaction research and development.• A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in an R&D, industrial, or equivalenttechnical environment.• A good command of English, both written and spoken.
