Apply & track with Apply EdgeSocode are partnering with a Cambridge-based medical technology company developing a next-generation system used in minimal access surgery. As the platform continues to evolve, they're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to take ownership of significant design work packages across the wider electromechanical system. The role is a genuinely hands-on one. You'll pick up sizeable pieces of design work and see them all the way through. You'll be involved from early concepts, detailed design, prototype builds, testing and eventually release into production. Day to day you'll be working closely with electronics, software, systems, manufacturing and quality colleagues on a product where the mechanical detail really matters. Hybrid working is on offer, with three days a week expected on site. What will you be doing?Running mechanical design activity on new products and product improvements, working within a regulated design processHolding end-to-end responsibility for your own work packages rather than picking up isolated tasksModelling parts and assemblies in SolidWorks, using surfacing where the geometry calls for itDesigning for real-world manufacture across machined, sheet metal and moulded componentsGetting hands on with prototypes and test rigs, then using what you learn to improve the designProducing and reviewing drawings and configuration documentation to a high standardWriting up technical reports to support verification activity and design reviewsDigging into product problems, working out what's actually causing them, and putting fixes in placeSharing knowledge with less experienced engineers and acting as a technical sounding boardHelping shape the team's tools, standards and ways of working as the department growsWhat are they looking for?A background in mechanical design where products you've worked on have made it into productionConfident SolidWorks user, comfortable with both solid and surface modellingGood grasp of design for manufacture across machining, sheet metal and injection mouldingAble to size and justify designs from first principles rather than relying on iteration aloneUsed to owning technically complex work and being accountable for the outcomePragmatic decision-maker who can weigh up cost, quality, manufacturability and timescalesStrong on drawings - creating them, checking them and interpreting other people'sComfortable writing technical documentation such as reports and design review materialEducated to degree level in Mechanical Engineering or something closely relatedNice to haveTime spent in a regulated industry, ideally medical devices under ISO 13485 and/or IEC 60601Involvement in transferring designs into low volume manufactureFamiliarity with BS 8888, and ideally GD&T to ISO 1101
